placed as an assem bly if the bushing is worn. However, if
ream ing equipm ent is available, bushing can be replaced
in side cover as follows:
1. T hread a 1-1/8” tap into bushing the full length of
bushing (fig. 8). Place side cover in a vise. Using a
suitable driver or rod inserted through lash adjuster
hole in cover against tap. press out tap and bushing.
2. Press new bushing in place and ream to dimension
shown in “ Specifications" at end of this section. It is
im portant that bushing is ream ed true.
BUSHING IN GEAR HOUSING
Type Steering Gear Shown in Figure 1
To replace Pitm an shaft bushing in gear housing, pro­
ceed as follows:
I. Using rem over and replaccr tool (J-5529) or suitable
sleeve, drive bushing from housing in m anner shown

in figure 9. Improvised tool can be m ade if desired.
2. Drive bushing into housing as shown in figure 10 with
remover and replacer tool (J-5529) or sleeve.
WORM THRUST BEARING CUP
REPLACEMENT
Type Steering Gear Shown in Figure 1
1. Using a suitable punch and ham m er, drive bearing
cup from steering gear housing.
2. Position new bearing cup squarely over recess in gear
housing and press cup iri until it is firmly and evenly
seated. Use old cup to press new cup into place.
3. Repeat these procedures lor adjuster screw bearing
cup replacement.
LASH ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT
AND ADJUSTMENT
Type Steering Gear Shown in Figure 1
I. Position lash adjuster screw shim on lash adjuster
screw. Insert adjuster screw and shim into slotted end of
Pitm an shaft.
2. Check clearance between adjuster screw head and
shaft as shown in figure 11. C learance m ust not exceed
0.002” . If clearance is more than 0.002” , select a thicker
