REAR AXLE 4-38
ferential spider.
2. Position spider assem b y in m ale half of differential
case.
3. Position female half of case over male half, aligning
punch m ark s m ade at tim e of disassembly.
4. Install bolts and nuts securing two halves of case.
Tighten to recom m ended torque and secure with lock
wire.
5.
Position inter-axle differential over output shaft side
gear, with nuts tow ard front (away from output shaft
side gear).
INTER-AXLE DIFFERENTIAL COVER
ASSEMBLY (FWD. AXLE!)
1. Install input shaft front bearing (30) into inter-axle
differential cover (29).
2. Install push' rod felt seal and retainer in cover.
3. Insert push rod into cover while engaging shift fork
with sliding clutch gear, then push this assem bly into
operating position.
NOTE: Paragraphs 4 through 7 following are
applicable only to axlles using air operated
inter-axle differential lock.
4.
Install gasket and shift cylinder body on cover and se
cure with cap screws and lock washers.
5.
S oak felt seals thoroughly in oil, then install seals and
grom m et on piston.
6. Install spring over push rod, then install piston assem
bly on rod. Install grom m et on push rod, then secure
piston to rod with nut and washer.
7. Install grom m et on cover, then install cover on body
and secure with stud nuts and lock washers.
NOTE: Paragraphs 8 through 11 following are
applicable only to axles using vacuum operated
inter-axle differential lock.
8. Install com pression spring and washer on push rod,
then com press spring and install retaining pin. C oat
spring and push rod w iti grease.
9. Install shift lever bracket to carrier cover, using new
gasket. Install and tighten cap screws.
10. Install shift lever in bracket, engaging slot in push
rod. Install clevis and cotter pins.
11. Install boot over shift lever and bracket.
INPUT SHAFT AND COVER ASSEMBLY
(FWD. AXLE)
1. Press bearing (30) on input shaft.
2. Locate input shaft in inter-axle differential cover, with
splines engaging sliding clutch gear and with bearing
seated in cover.
3. Install bearing cover and oil seal assembly using same
shim pack removed at tim e of disassembly, provided
original parts are being reinstalled. Tighten cap
screws only finger tight.
NOTE: To determine shim pack thickness install
retainer without shims and tighten cap screws
finger tight. Measure clearance between retain
er and cover, then add 0.003 inches to this di
mension which is the thickness of shims re
quired for correct bearing dearance.
4. Install propeller shaft yoke and nut on input shaft.
Tighten nut to recom m ended torque, then secure with
cotter pin.
5. Install “ D ” shaped washer (4) thrust w asher (5), and
helical side gear (6) on input shaft (2) and secure with
snap ring (fig. 3).
INTER-AXLE DIFFERENTIAL COVER
INSTALLATION (FWD. AXLE)
NOTE: Be sure pinion helical drive gear nut
(28) is tightened to recommended torque and
secured with cotter pin before cover is installed.
1. Install cover assembly on differential carrier, al
igning dowel pins with holes in cover and using
new gasket. R otate input shaft to m esh shaft
splines with differential spider splines.
2. Install cover to carrier cap screws and lock
washers. Use caution during tightening to be sure
cover seats against carrier w ithout binding.
3. Check inter-axle differential operation by holding
output shaft while turning input shaft. If the as
sembly differentiates, the unit is correctly as
sembled.
DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER INSTALLATION
1. Install new carrier to housing gasket over studs.
2. S tart carrier assem bly (20) over studs and lower into
housing. Install stud nuts and lock washers, then
tighten evenly and alternately until tight.
HOUSING CO VER INSTALLATION
1. A t forward axle, press output shaft rear bearing (14)
into housing cover (17), then secure with snap ring.
2. A t forward axle, coat outer surface with P erm atex, or
equivalent, to prevent oil leaks, then install seal as
sem bly (15) in housing cover.
3. Place new gasket on housing, then install housing
cover assembly using stud nuts and lock washers.
DIFFERENTIAL LO CK CO N TRO LS
The differential lock m echanism used on these axles is
either vacuum or air controlled, depending upon the
model of vehicle. Refer to instructions previously in this
section for removal and installation of air shift cylinder
assembly at forward axle differential lock cover.
