STA RT IN G M O T O R D ISA SSEM BLY
LIGHT-DUTY TYPE (Figs. 1 and 2)
1. Remove screw and lock washer attaching field coil
connector strap to lower (motor) terminal on solen
oid.
2. Remove through-bolts which attach co m m u tato r end
frame to drive end housing. Remove the com m utator
end frame.
3. Remove field frame from arm ature and drive housing.
4. On starting m otors shown in figure 2, remove four
screws and washers which attach the center bearing
plate to drive housing.
5. Remove the arm ature and drive assembly from drive
housing, tilting the armature as necessary to disen
gage lugs on shift lever from drive collar.
6. Remove the two screws and washers which attach the
solenoid to the drive housing.
7. Remove overrunning cluich from the arm ature shaft
as follow's:
a. Slide thrust collar off end of arm ature shaft.
b. Slide a standard 1 /2 - inch pipe coupling or
other metallic cylinder of correct size onto shaft
so end of coupling or cylinder butts against edge
of retainer (fig. 5). Tap end of coupling with
ha m m er to drive retainer down toward arm ature
and off snap ring.
c. Remove snap ring from groove in arm ature shaft.
If snap ring is distorted during removal, it must
be discarded and a new one obtained for assembly.
d. Slide retainer and clutch assembly off armature
shaft.
e. On starting motors shown in figure 2, remove
center bearing plate and fiber washer.
8. It is not necessary to further disassemble the starter
unless parts require replacement as indicated later
under “ Inspection, Tests, and Repair.’’
INTERMEDIATE-DUTY TYPE (Fig. 3)
1 N ote the position of solenoid, lever housing, and nose
housing so parts can be assembled later in same rela
tive position.
2. D i s c o n n e c t f i e l d coil c o n n e c t o r f ro m soleno id
“ m oto r” terminal, and remove solenoid mounting
screws.
3. Remove two through-bolts and lock washers from
com m utator end frame, then remove c o m m u ta to r end
frame from field frame and field frame from lever
housing.
