REAR AXLE 4-25
SHIMS
Carefully inspect shims for uniform thickness. Remove
any accum ulated foreign m atter that m ight affect shim
pack thickness. W here various thickness of shim s are used
in a pack, it is recom m ended th at the thickest shims be
used between the thin shims.
THRUST WASHERS
T hrust washers should always be replaced, even though
only the slightest of wear is indicated. Refer to “ Specifi
cations” for thickness of new parts.
SPIDER
Carefully inspect spider arm s for wear, or other evi
dence of failure. Refer to “ Specifications” at end of this
publication.
H O U S IN G C H E C K
Refer to the Service portion of this M anu al for “ Bent
H ousing C heck” which is accom plished before axle is
removed from vehicle.
AFTER REMOVAL
A fter axle assem bly has been completely disassembled,

discard axle shaft. Position dial indicator so that indicator
shaft end contacts inner surface of flange near outer edge
of flange and check flange run-out. Refer to “ Specifica
tions” at end of this publication for limits.
GASKETS
The use of old gaskets is not recom m ended as they are
usually com pressed beyond further usefulness.
