hub on front end of shaft to dimensions shown in Fig

ENGINE ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
GENERAL
Procedures for assembling engine components are ar
ranged in logical sequence and may be followed to as
semble an engine which has been removed and completely
disassembled. M any of the procedures are also applicable
to reassemble parts removed from engine while installed
in vehicle. Repair and build-up of subassemblies is cov
ered in earlier paragraphs in this section.
CAMSHAFT INSTALLATION
1. Apply S.A.E. 90 hypoid gear lubricant on camshaft
bearing journals and lobes, then install camshaft and
gear assembly in bearings in cylinder block.
2. Attach camshaft thrust plate to cylinder block with
two screws.
CRANKSHAFT REAR BEARING OIL SEAL
C ra n k s h a ft rear bearing oil seal consists of two pieces
of special packing. One piece is installed in groove in rear
bearing cap and the other piece is installed in similar
groove in cylinder block. C rankshaft is knurled and pol
ished at area contacted by oil seal. Side seals (1, fig. 37)
are used to prevent oil leakage at sides of crankshaft rear
bearing cap and plugs (5, fig. 37) are used to seal rear
bolt holes. Installation of plugs and bearing cap side seals
is covered later under “ Installation C rankshaft and Bear
ings."
Seal Installation
1. Position seal in groove in block, then use oil seal in
staller (J-8528) as shown in Figure 36. to pack seal
firmly into place in groove.
2. In similar manner, install seal in bearing cap.
3. Using a sharp knife, cut off both ends of each seal
which project out of grooves.
