side gear (6), thrust washer (5), and “ D ” shaped
washer (4) from input shaft (fig. 3).
2. Rem ove cotter pin and nut, then rem ove propeller
shaft yoke (32) from input shaft (fig. 4) using suitable
puller.
3. Rem ove cap screws and lock washers attaching bear­
ing retainer (1) to cover. Rem ove retainer and oil seal
assembly (fig. 5). Rem ove and tag shims for reassem ­
bly reference.
4. Replace oil seals in retainer as directed under “ Oil
Seal R eplacem ent” in ‘G E N E R A L R E A R A X L E
I N F O R M A T I O N ” section.
5. Using soft ham m er, drive input shaft and bearing for­
ward and out of cover I fig. 6.)
NOTE: Paragraphs 6 through 8 following are
applicable only to axles using air operated
inter-axle differential lock.
6. Remove stud nuts and lock washers attaching cover to
inter-axle differential shift cylinder. Rem ove cover

and grom m ets; discard grom m ets.
7. Remove nut, flat washer and grom m et from push rod
(fig- 7).
8. Rem ove cap screws and lock washers attaching shift
cylinder body to cover. R em ove shift cylinder body
assembly from cover (fig. 8). Remove and discard
gasket.
NOTE: Paragraphs 9 through 11 following are
applicable only to axles using vacuum operated
inter-axle differential lock.
9. Rem ove boot from lockout shift lever, then remove
cotter pin and clevis pin. Pull shift lever from shift
lever bracket (fig. 9).
10. Remove cap screws and lock washers attaching shift
lever bracket to cover, then remove bracket (fig. 10)
11. C om press spring, then remove pin, washer arid
spring from shift fork push rod.
