GEN ERA L DESCRIPTIO N
Internal construction of the axles covered in this section
are illustrated in Figure 1 and com ponents in Figure 2.
M aintenance and repair procedures on all m odel axles are
similar with exceptions noted in text.
D R IV E P IN IO N A N D C A G E
Propeller shaft yoke is splined to drive pinion and re­
tained on pinion with a nut and washer.
Drive pinion is straddle m ounted between straight roller
bearing at inner end and two opposed taper roller bear­
ings at outer end.
Drive pinion bearing pre-load adjustm ent is controlled
by thickness of bearing spacers installed between pinion
bearings. Shim pack thickness, used between pinion cage
and carrier, can be varied to provide proper pinion and
drive gear backlash and gear tooth contact.
DIFFERENTIAL
Differential is conventional four pinion type with drive
gear bolted to flanged half of differential case. Differen­
tial case is two-piece type m achined as a m atched assem ­
bly, and m ust be replaced as such.
T hrust washers are used between differential side gears
and case, also between differential pinions and case.
