PINION CA G E REMOVAL (FORWARD AXLE)
1. C ut lock wire, then remove cap screws attaching pi­
nion cage to differential carrier.
2. Use brass rod and ham m er to tap end of pinion so to
drive assembly from carrier. Use caution not to d a m ­
age pinion bearing. Puller screws can also be used to
pull pinion and cage assem bly from carrier (fig. 8).
3. Remove adjusting shims from between cage and car­
rier. W ire shim pack together to facilitate adjustm ent
at tim e of reassembly.
PINION AND CAG E DISASSEMBLY
(FORWARD AXLE)
1. C lam p teeth of pinion in vise having soft jaw plates,
while removing nut and flat washer from pinion.
2. Place assembly in arbor press with cage on arbor
blocks. Press pinion dow nw ard and out of cage and
gear (fig. 17).
3. R em ove bearing adjusting spacer, used between bear­
ings, and tag for reassembly reference.
4. Bearing cups can be rem oved from pinion cage with
rem over (J-3940) in m anner illustrated in figure 18
when inspection indicates necessity.
5. If inspection indicates necessity, rem ove bearings
from pinion using puller (J-3493) in m anner illustrat­
ed in figure 19.
PINION CA G E REMOVAL (REARWARD AXLE)
1. Rem ove bolts and lock washers which attach pinion
cage to carrier. W ith puller screws installed as shown
in Figure 20, pull cage from carrier.
NOTE: Use of pinch bar may damage the
shims.
2. Rem ove adjusting shim s from between carrier and
cage. W ire shim pack together to facilitate adjustm ent
at reassembly.
