2. Install straight roller bearing on shaft, then install
lock ring retaining bearing to pinion.
3. If new cups are to be installed, press cups firmly
against shoulder of pinion cage.
4. Lubricate bearings with recom m ended axle lubricant;
then insert pinion and bearing assem bly into cage.
Place original adjusting spacer over pinion shaft.
5. Press outer p nion bearing onto pinion.
6. A djust pinion bearing pre-load as instructed under
“ Pinion Bearing A djustm ent” in “ G E N E R A L R E A R
A X L E I N F O R M A T I O N ” .
7. Press gear on pinion shaft, then install washer and
nut. Tighten pinion nut, using torque wrench.
8. Recheck pinion bearing torque to be sure it is still
within the recom m ended limits.
PINION CAG E INSTALLATION
(FORWARD AXLE)
1. In stall orig in al shim p ack on carrier.
2. Install pinion and cage assem bly on carrier, being
sure that oil passage holes are not covered.
3. Install cap screws and tighten to recom m ended to r
que.

IMPORTANT: If the gauge method is to be used
to determine pinion cage shim pack thickness,
the gauging operation should be accomplished
at this stage of assembly. Refer to "Gear Back
lash and Tooth Contact" in "GENERAL REAR
AXLE INFORMATION." If gauge method is not
to be used, continue with assembly operations
as described in following paragraphs.
PINION AND CA G E ASSEMBLY
(REARWARD AXLE)
If inspection indicates th at drive pinion should be re
placed, replacem ent of drive gear is also necessary as
these parts are serviced as m atched sets.
1. Press inner pinion bearing onto drive pinion with wide
portion of cone tow ard pinion, until seated against
shoulder.
2. Install straight roller bearing on shaft. Install retainer
and snap ring retaining bearing to pinion.
