thrust bearing from adjuster screw.
2. Remove w orm shaft and ball nut assembly from
housing through adjuster assem bly opening.
IMPORTANT: Do not hold worm shaft and ball
nut in a vertical position as ball nut will travel
by its own weight to end of shaft. If ball nut
sharply strikes either end of shaft worm, ball
guides will be damaged.
3. T ry action of ball nut on shaft w orm . Ball nut m ust
rotate sm oothly with no evidence of binding or rough
ness. Tape shaft worm at both ends of ball nut to
keep nut from running up or down; then until ready
to disassemble, lay the assem bly flat on work bench.
4. Rem ove worm thrust bearing ball and separator as
sembly.
5. Remove screws attaching ball guide clam p to ball nut.
Remove clam p. Pull ball guides out of ball nut as
shown in figure 4. Remove balls from guides by sep
arating guides.
6. T urn ball nut upside down over a clean pan and ro
tate worm shaft back and forth until all balls have
been removed. Pull ball nut endwise from w orm shaft.
7. Remove Pitm an shaft oil seal from housing and dis
card. New oil seals should be used when reassembling
the steering gear.
8. Remove adjuster w orm thrust bearing oil seal from
cup and adjuster assembly. Discard oil seal.
9. Removal of thrust bearing cups from housing and ad
juster and bushings from housing and side cover
should be deferred until inspection of parts indicate
necessity for removal.
TYPE STEERING GEAR SHOWN IN FIGURE 2
ONLY
1. Accom plish steps 1 through 7 described previously at
beginning of disassembly procedures.
2. Remove top cover to housing attaching bolts and lock
washers; then carefully w ithdraw top cover, worm , and
ball nut assembly as a unit. Remove lower w orm thrust
bearing.
3. Remove top cover from w orm shaft. Rem ove upper
thrust bearing from top cover. R etain shim pack for reas
sembly of steering gear.

5. Remove lower thrust bearing cone, using bearing re
mover plates (J-8176) (fig. 5).
6. Remove lower ball nut pin stop.
7. Remove screws attaching ball guide clam p to ball nut.
Remove clam p. Pull ball guides out of ball nut as shown
in figure 4. Rem ove balls from guides by separating
guides.
8. Remove tape from w orm shaft; then turn ball nut
upside down over a clean pan and rotate w orm shaft back
and forth until all balls have been removed. Pull ball nut
endwise from w orm shaft.
9. Remove upper thrust bearing cone from w orm shaft,
using bearing remover plates (J-8176) (fig. 5). Remove
upper ball nut stop pin from w orm shaft.
10. Remove Pitm an shaft oil seal from gear housing and
discard.
11. Remove w orm shaft oil seal from top cover and dis
card. New oil seals should be used when reassembling the
steering gear.
12. Rem oval of lower w orm thrust bearing cup from
housing, upper thrust bearing cup from top cover, needle
bearing from side cover, and needle bearing or bearings
