until seated tightly against shoulders in cage.
4. Install pinion and bearing assem bly in pinion cage.
Install sam e bearing adjusting spacer as removed at
disassembly. Press outer bearing cone on pinion.
5. Place pinion and cage in an arbor press and apply
9-10 tons pressure to bearings.
6. W rap soft wire around cage and pull on horizontal
line with spring scale (J-8129). R otating (not starting)
torque should be within limits given in “ Specifica
tions” at end of this section.
7. Proper bearing adjustm ent is obtained by selective
spacer (26) used between pinion bearing cones. Refer
to “ Specifications” at end of this section for sizes of
spacers available.

DIFFERENTIAL PINION GEAR BUSHING
Replacement
1. Place pinion in vise fitted with soft jaw pads, then use
hack saw to split bushing at tw o places opposite each
other. Bushing can now be easily removed.
2. Rem ove burrs or sharp edges from pinion bore which
m ight interfere with proper bushing installation.
3. Press new bushing into pinion until bushing is cen
tered equally in pinion.
4. Burnish or ream bushing to size as indicated in
“ Specifications” at end of this section.
REASSEM BLY
All gears, thrust washers, bearings, and contact surfaces
should be coated with recom m ended differential lubri
cant, before parts are installed, to prevent scoring
during initial axle operation.
PINION AND C A G E ASSEMBLY AND
INSTALLATION (REARWARD AXLE)
Procedures for assem bly and installation of rearw ard
axle pinion and. cage on these axles is the same as de
scribed and illustrated in section for E aton rear axle
m odel 17121.
PINION AND C A G E ASSEMBLY (FWD. AXLE)
1. Press pinion inner tapered bearing cone onto pinion,
with wide portion of cone tow ard pinion teeth, until
seated against shoulder. Use bearing replacer plates
(J-3493) and an arbor press.
2. Press straight roller bearing (21) onto pinion, then
stake end of pinion using a staking tool or a round
nosed punch.
3. If removed press tapered roller bearing cups into cage
PINION AND C A G E INSTALLATION
(FWD. AXLE)
1. Place sam e shims (25) that were rem oved at disas
sembly on differential carrier, then position pinion
and cage assembly in carrier.
2. Install cap screws and lock w ashers attaching cage to
carrier. Tighten cap screws to recom m ended torque.
3. Install helical drive gear (27) on pinion, then install
retaining nut (28). N u t is tightened to recom m ended
torque after differential is installed.
GEAR TOOTH CONTACT AND BACKLASH
Instructions for obtaining proper gear tooth contact and
backlash are given in “ G E N E R A L R E A R A X L E I N
F O R M A T I O N ” section. These instructions cover both
the “ Red L ead” and “ Pinion Setting G auge” methods.
DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY
AND INSTALLATION
Procedure for reassem bly and installation of forward
and rearw ard axle differential assem bly used on these
axles is described and illustrated in “ S IN G L E R E D U C
T IO N R E A R A X L E ” section for E aton rear axle model
17121.
OUTPUT SHAFT INSTALLATION (FWD. AXLE)
1. If removed, install bearing cone
(
9
)
on output shaft
side gear.
2. Install side gear (8) and bearing assem bly on output
shaft and secure with snap ring.
3. Install two new O-rings (12) in grooves of output
shaft.
4. Install output shaft and bearing cone assem bly in dif
ferential carrier.
INTER-AXLE DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY
(FWD. AXLE)
1. Install thrust washers and differential pinions on dif
