LUBRICATION 0-16
necessary. Use ' ‘Automatic Transmission Fluid -
Type
A ”
bearing an A Q- A TF number, or “ H y
draulic Transmission Fluid Type C ” . A good
grade of 10W engine oil may be used temporarily
in emergencies, but must be replaced with Auto
matic Transmission Fluid as soon as possible.
Checking Fluid
Dipstick and filler tube are located at right
side.
1. Apply hand brake. Start engine and warm
fluid to operating temperature. IM P O R T A N T : Do
not operate retarder while warming fluid. Move
selector lever through all speed ranges.
2. Run engine at 1000 rpm with lever in “ N ”
(Neutral).
3. Clean dipstick and adjacent area, then re
move dipstick, clean, reinsert, again remove and
note fluid level.
4. Add one quart of fluid when level reaches
“ A D D ” mark.
3. Install new element in reverse order of
removal.
Tighten nut to 8-10 ft.-lbs. torque.
4. Pour eight quarts fluid into transmission
using clean container and spout, or funnel.
5. Start engine and check fluid level. Add
fluid as necessary to bring level up to mark on
dipstick. D O N O T O V E R F IL L !
UNIVERSAL JOINTS
At specified intervals, use pressure gun to
apply lubricant through fitting in universal joint
trunnion (fig. 15). To insure proper lubrication of
all four trunnion bearings, it is important that
lubricant be added until it appears at all four
journal bearing seals (fig. 15). It should not be
assumed that bearings are lubricated unless
lubricant is observed coming from around all
four bearing seals. However, if lubricant does not
appear at all seals, move the universal joint trun
nion in all four directions while applying lubricant
under pressure.
Draining and Refilling
Drain the transmission and replace the filter
after the first 6,000 miles of operation. At the
12,000 mile interval of highway driving and 6,000
miles of driving over unimproved roads, (or 6
mos. whichever occurs first) the transmission
should be drained and refilled and the filter
should be replaced. Approximately 9 qts. of fluid
are required to refill the transmission after the
pan has been drained. Drain immediately after
operation - while fluid is still warm . D o not flush
transmission after draining.
1. Loosen acorn nut which secures filter
cover to oil pan.
2. When drainage is complete, remove acorn
nut, washer, cover, gasket, retainer, and filter
element.
