left differential case, then install idler pinions (8) on
pins (7).
3. Install high speed clutch plate (9) on idler pinions (8)
with cham fered teeth of plate tow ard pinions.
4. Position left support case (12) over plate, then install
support case bolts (3) and nuts. Tighten nuts alter
nately and evenly to recom m ended torque of 130-150
foot-pounds.
5. Check to be sure differential and planetary assembly
operates properly.
INSTALLATIO N OF SU BA SSEM BLIES
PINION AND CAG E INSTALLATION
1. Install original shims, that were removed at disassem
bly, on differential carrier.
2. Install pinion and cage assembly to carrier. Be sure
oil passages in shims are in alignm ent with oil passa
ges in cage and carrier.
3. Install pinion bearing cage cap screws (63) and lock
washers. Tighten to torque listed in “ Specifications”
at end of overhaul procedures.
IMPORTANT: If the gauge method is to be used
to determine pinion cage shim pack thickness,
the gauging operation should be accomplished
at this stage of assembly. Refer to "Gear Back
lash and Tooth Contact" contained in single
speed axle overhaul this publication. If gauge
method is not to be used, continue with assem
bly operations as described in following parag
raphs:
DIFFERENTIAL AND PLANETARY
UNIT INSTALLATION
Key num bers in text refer to Figure 3.
1. Position bearing cups (9 and 35) on support case
bearing cones, then position differential and planetary
unit in carrier (View B, fig. 6).
2. Install bearing adjusters (8 and 36), bearing caps (7)
and cap bolts (2).
C AU TIO N : If caps do not position prop erly, a d
justers m a y b e cross-threaded. Lift caps a n d re
position adjusters. Forcing caps into position in
the eve n t adjusters are cross-threaded w ill re
sult in da m a g e to carrier a n d bearing caps.
Tighten cap bolts sn u gly, then back o ff only
su fficien tly to turn adjusters.
3. Turn right adjuster in until punch m ark on adjuster is
in original position (View C, fig. 5). T urn left adjuster
in until no end-play exists between differential and
carrier. C heck for end-play using dial indicator (J-
8001) at back of bevel gear as shown in Figure 19.
4. Adjust gear lash and tooth contact. Refer to “ G ear
Tooth C o ntact and B acklash” contained in single
speed axle overhaul of this section.
NOTE: Position after final adjustment of left
bearing adjuster must be such that adjuster
lock can be properly installed over notches of
adjuster.
5. After gear lash and tooth contact adjustm ents have
been made, and with .000 inches end play existing be
tween differential and carrier; and light pre-load to
different'al bearings by turning in right adjuster 1 1 /2
to 2 notches.
6. Install right bearing adjuster lock (6) and secure with
cotter pin. Install left adjuster lock (38) and attach
with two cap screws (39).
7. Tighten bearing cap bolts to foot-pounds torque as in
dicated in “ Specifications” at end of this m anual.
W ire cap bolts securely.
