tion of balls in guide. R eplace guides if any res­
triction exists. C heck return guide clam p.
9. Check top cover for cracks or dam age to tapped
holes.
TYPE STEERING GEAR SHOWN IN FIGURE 1
1. M easure diam eter of side cover and gear housing

bushings. If bushings are dam aged or w orn excessive­
ly, replace as described under “ Steering G ear R e­
pair.” Refer to “ Specifications” later for new limits
on bushings.
2. Inspect the condition of adjuster assem bly threads in
housing. Check cup and adjuster assembly for dam age
and stripped threads. C up in inner end of adjuster
screw serves as outer race for w orm upper thrust
bearing.
TYPE STEERING GEAR SHOWN IN FIGURE 2
1. Inspect needle bearings in housing and side cover. If
worn or chipped, replace as described later under
“ Steering G ear R epair.”
2. C heck thrust bearing cones and cups. If cracked,
scored, or worn excessively, replace as described later
under “ Steering G ear R ep air.”
