panel by placing a prop between top of engine and
center panel. See upper view of figure 2.
8. With aid of an assistant to lift radiator
shell assembly upward so that radiator core sup
port center bracket clears top of core, move as
sembly forward from vehicle.
N O T E : If desired, the radiator core upper
center support bracket can be removed from shell
assembly.
IN S T A L L A T IO N (Refer to Fig. 2)
Install the radiator shell unit to vehicle in the
reverse of the "Removal" procedures.
N O T E :
The following additional information
will apply when replacing radiator core and sup
port with the radiator shell as an assembly.
1. Drain the cooling system and disconnect
radiator hoses.
2. If radiator assembly includes oil cooler,
make provisions for catching oil drainage from oil
cooler ports and lines. Disconnect all coolant
hoses and oil lines (if equipped) from radiator
core assembly.
3. If vehicle is equipped with air conditioning
or power steering cooling coils, remove coils and
lines as necessary.
4. On some models it may be necessary to
remove fan shroud attaching bolts, then lay shroud
back over fan blades.
5. On diesel engine models, remove upper
lock nuts, washers, and cushions from radiator
support strut rods.
N O T E :
D O N O T move lower lock nuts or
jam nuts on strut rods.
6. Remove bolts which attach the radiator
shell brackets (right and left) to the flexible
mounting as shown in Figure 4.
N O T E :
On H V and JV 70 models, flexible
mounting bracket (fig. 4) is inserted (180°).
7. When
removing radiator
shell without
radiator core and support perform Step 3 on page
11-1 as follows:
Remove attaching bolts (number of bolts de
pends on models) which attach each side of shell
to radiator support frame brackets.
8. Install radiator shell unit in vehicle in the
reverse of removal procedures.
N O T E :
If collision repairs were made to
front end of vehicle, it may be necessary to re
align the shell and hood panels, using means of
threaded yoke on radiator shell support strut rods
(fig. 5). By shortening or lengthening rods, top of
radiator core and shell can be tilted fore and aft
to obtain proper hood alignment.
RADIATO R SHELL M O U N T IN G
BRACKET REPLACEMENT
1. Secure adequate support for the radiator
core (when involved) and radiator shell sheet
metal, as these components will drop when sup
port bracket is removed.
2. Remove all bolts, nuts and washers se
curing mounting bracket to frame rail, to radiator
shell and to radiator core support (if involved).
3. Remove mounting bracket. In some cases
b r a c k e t may be
f u r t h e r diassembled for
inspection.
4. Replace worn mounting pads or cushions
and assemble bracket if necessary.
