T hreaded adjusters are provided at each end of differen
tial for differential bearing adjustm ent, also for drive gear
AXLE SHAFTS AND HOUSING
Axle shafts are full-floating type, splined to differential
side gears at inner ends and attached at flanged outer
ends to hubs by studs and nuts. Stud holes in each shaft
flange are taper-ream ed to accom m odate split tapered
and drive pinion backlash, and gear tooth contact adjust
ments.

The axle housing is one-piece design with spring seats and
housing cover welded in place. Brake shoe backing plate
is attached to a flange welded near outer ends of housing.

wheel bearings and wheel bearing adjusting nuts.

Axle shafts and differential carrier assem bly can be re
moved for repair w ithout removing axle assembly from
vehicle. However, rear axle should be removed from vehi
cle when unit is to be completely overhauled.
Before removing axle assembly from vehicle, axle hous
ing should be checked as instructed in the Service portion
of this M anual.

REM O V A L OF SU B A SSEM B LIES
Procedures in following paragraphs apply to all axles in
this publication:
1. Check axle housing for lubricant leaks, before clean
ing; then clean thoroughly.
2. Check drive gear and pinion backlash. R ecord this in
form ation for reference at time of reassembly.
3. Check pinion bearing end play.
NOTE: Since propeller shaft yoke nut is torqued
tight, it is a good policy that it be loosened at
this time using holding bar as described and il
lustrated in Service portion of this Manual.
AXLE SHAFT REMOVAL
Procedures for removal of axle shafts rem ains the same
with axle assembly removed, or installed in the vehicle.
Refer to Service portion of this M anual for rem oval p ro
cedure.
DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER REMOVAL
Procedure for removal of differential carrier assembly
is covered in the Service portion of this M anual.
M ount differential carrier assembly in suitable repair
stand, such as J-3409, typically illustrated in Figure 3.
