from housing should be deferred until inspection of parts
indicate necessity for further disassembly.
INSPECTION OF PARTS
(Refer to Figures 6 and 7)
ALL TYPES STEERING GEARS
1. Clean all parts thoroughly in suitable cleaning solvent
and wipe or blow parts dry prior to inspection, repair,
and assembly of the steering gear. Procedures should
not be attem pted in dirty surroundings. Parts m ust be
absolutely clean.
2. Inspect steering gear housing for cracks, distortion,
and condition of threads in tapped holes. Replace
housing if dam aged.
3. On steering gear assemblies having an expansion plug
in gear housing, check for looseness or signs of grease
leakage. If apparent, replace plug as follows:
a. Remove plug from housing by pressing center of plug
outw ard from housing. As curvature of plug is
changed, it will become loose and can easily be re
moved without dam age to housing.
b. W hile expansion plug is removed, check condition of
lower worm thrust bearing cup. Replace if neces
sary, as described later under “ Steering G ear R e
pair.’"
c. Position new expansion plug in gear housing with
convex side facing out. Press on center of plug to
deform it inward to secure in housing.
4. Check side cover for cracks or other dam age.
5. Inspect Pitm an shaft for dam aged serrations and
threads. Exam ine sector gear teeth for scuffing or
scoring. Check outside diam eter of shaft at hous
ing and side cover ends. If excessive wear is evi
dent, replace shaft.
6. T horoughly inspect steering w orm for scoring, bend
ing, and wear.
7. Exam ine worm ball nut for scuffing, scoring, or wear
on rack teeth and on ball thread groove. Check all
holes and passages for obstructions. Check worm
balls for flat spots, checking, wear, or dam age.
Balls should all be the sam e size within 0.0001” .
8. Inspect ball return guides for distortion or dam age.
