15.4 SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
Description
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is an IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) recognized
protocol (RFC-3261) to establish, maintain and terminate multimedia sessions between
endpoints over an IP network. SIP, is an application layer control protocol that employs other
protocols, such as SDP (Session Description Protocol) to describe the desired connection
characteristics and other lower layer protocols.
ipLDK-60 operates in two distinct SIP modes based on the SIP call server routing of incoming
calls. The first mode is based on the SIP Register ‘method’; in this case, the system registers
a SIP User ID to the SIP call server ‘Registrar’, which identifies the location to receive calls.
The second mode is ‘SIP Trunking’; the SIP call server routes calls to a designated IP endpoint,
in this case, the ipLDK VOIB IP address or a proxy. In either case, the VOIB CO line can
provide ‘Normal’ or ‘DID/MSN’ service. Once active at the ipLDK-60, incoming and outgoing
calls are routed and handled as with the type of service and other attributes assigned for the
station and VOIB CO line.
