SEAT BELT AND AIR BAG
8-15
OPERATIONS OF AIR BAG AND PRETENSIONER
When a strong frontal impact
occurs, seat belt pretensioners
rewind the seat belts immedi-
ately to restrain the occupants
to their seats. It helps the effec-
tive operation of the seat belts
and airbags.
Pretensioner
The pretensioner is a de-
vice that retracts the seat
belt to tighten or loosen the
seat belt. When a collision
occurs or when brakes are
applied, the pretensioner
detects the stopping pres-
sure and tightens the belt
before the occupant is pro-
pelled forward. This holds
the occupant in the seat
more securely.
