13.05 Pen Test for Verifying CD/ED Before Cutting
•
A safe and relatively easy test will help you adjust the
CD/ED
so that you will cut through your material but
not cut through the mat. Before performing this test, have the following items available:
Pen with a firm nib
Material to be cut
Sheet of chipboard or other material to protect the cutting mat
Masking Tape
Sheet of copy paper
Optional: small piece of aluminum foil or plastic wrap to protect the material from ink

Perform this test any time you are cutting a new material:
(1) If you used a caliper to measure the thickness of the material, then use the
Calculated CD/ED
for this
test. If you used the manufacturer’s reported thickness or you are approximating with a ruler, then use
the
Recommended CD/ED
.
(2) Use a small basic shape, such as a circle or a square, for the test.
