When normal currents flow through the circuit
breaker, the contacts in the main and auxiliary
interrupting chambers are closed. Both chambers are
filled with compressed air.
Compressed
Moving
Decompressed
Atmospheric
On opening, the moving contact in the main chamber
is actuated, the blast valves open and release air from
the chamber, thus producing a double axial blast
between the contacts that extinguishes the arc and
interrupts the short-circuit current.
The auxiliary-chamber contacts open within
milliseconds after those in the main chamber. A single
or double axial blast between the fixed and moving
auxiliary-chamber contacts interrupts the resistor
current.
