Camshaft: Removal - Refitting

Removal of the high pressure pump drive pinion
a
Carry out this operation only when replacing the
camshaft on the exhaust side of the front row or the
high pressure pump drive pinion.
Camshaft on the exhaust side of the front cylinder
bank
a
Lock the high-pressure pump drive pinion using a
vice with jaws.
a
Remove the bolt ( 4 ) from the pinion, while support-
ing the camshaft by hand.
REFITTING
I - REFITTING PREPARATION OPERATION
a
Use SURFACE CLEANER (see Vehicle: Parts
and consumables for the repair ) (04B, Consuma-
bles - Products) to clean:
- the camshafts,
- the camshaft bearing caps,
- the camshaft bearings on the rocker cover.
a
Check that the teeth of the high pressure pump drive
pinion are not chipped, flaked, or scratched.
a
Always replace the bolt for the high pressure pump
drive pinion.
Refitting the high pressure pump pinion
a
Carry out this operation only when replacing the ex-
haust side camshaft or the high pressure pump drive
pinion.
a
Immobilise the high pressure pump drive pinion in a
vice with jaws.
a
Fit a new high pressure pump drive pinion bolt with-
out tightening and while supporting the camshaft
(exhaust side).
a
Torque and angle tighten the high pressure pump
drive pinion bolt (40 N.m + 34˚
± ±
± ± 6˚) .
II - CAMSHAFT REFITTING OPERATION
a
Fit the rocker cover on the (Mot. 1573) .
a
Using engine oil, lubricate the camshaft bearings on
the rocker covers.
a
Fit the camshafts onto the rocker covers.
a
Refit the camshaft bearing caps.
a
Torque tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts (10
N.m) .
a
Remove the rocker cover from the tool (Mot. 1573)
or from the cylinder head support.
III - FINAL OPERATION
a
Refit:
- the rocker covers (see 11A , Top and front of en-
gine , Rocker cover: Removal - Refitting , page
11A-139 ) ,
- the injector rails (see 13B , Diesel injection , Injec-
tor rail: Removal - Refitting , page 13B-189 ) ,
- the damper valve (see 12A , Fuel mixture , Damp-
er valve: Removal - Refitting , page 12A-39 ) ,
- the diesel injectors (see 13B , Diesel injection ,
Diesel injector: Removal - Refitting , page 13B-
229 ) ,
- the high pressure pipe between the rails (see 13B ,
Diesel injection , High pressure pipe between
rails: Removal - Refitting , page 13B-184 ) ,
- the high pressure pipes between the rail and the in-
jector (see 13B , Diesel injection , High pressure
pipe between rail and injector: Removal - Refit-
ting
, page 13B-161 ) ,

Note:
Do not hit the camshaft side stops when fitting
them to the rocker covers.
Note:
Check that the centring dowels are fitted to the
rocker covers before refitting the bearing caps.
