Timing chain: Removal - Refitting

REFITTING
I - REFITTING PREPARATION
a
Clean the joint faces of the timing cover using SU-
PER CLEANING AGENT FOR JOINT FACES (see
Vehicle: Parts and consumables for the repair ) .
a
Remove the residue using a plastic spatula.
a
Finish cleaning the joint faces using a GREY ABRA-
SIVE PAD .
a
Use SURFACE CLEANER (see Vehicle: Parts
and consumables for the repair ) to clean:
- the joint face of the timing cover on the cylinder
block and on the cylinder head,
- the timing cover.
a
Parts always to be replaced:
- Timing chain.
- Timing hydraulic tensioner.
- Crankshaft timing sprocket.
- Timing sprocket (driven by the chain) on the cam-
shaft (exhaust side).
- Timing sprocket washer on the camshaft, exhaust
side.
- Timing sprocket bolt on the camshaft, exhaust
side.
- Timing chain guide
- Timing chain guide bolt.
- Timing chain tensioner guide.
- Timing chain tensioner guide bolt.
II - REFITTING THE TIMING CHAIN

Set the engine at top dead centre.
a
Fit the top dead centre setting pin (Mot. 1766) .
a
Check that:
- the mark ( 18 ) on the wear compensation pinion is
opposite the boss ( 19 ) on the rocker cover,
- the groove on the camshaft (exhaust side) is hori-
zontal (large offset ( 20 ) facing upwards).
WARNING
Do not scrape the joint faces of the aluminium,
any damage caused to the joint face will result in
a risk of leaks.
WARNING
To ensure proper sealing, the gasket surfaces
must be clean, dry and not greasy (avoid any fin-
ger marks).
WARNING
Applying excess sealant could cause it to be
squeezed out when parts are tightened. A mix-
ture of sealant and fluid could damage certain
components (engine, radiator, etc.).
