Password Recovery
In certain situations a system user may be prevented from logging in because a previous user has changed the password or
altered the configuration. Rebooting the SCM does not help if the previous user has executed the
write mem
command.
The password recovery option enables you to access the CLI at the console without having to supply a user ID or password.
After a password recovery you have access to all the CLI commands without having to supply the enable password. You can
then change the configuration to your liking and, if desired, reboot the SCM to restore it to its normal state with required
user authentication.
Note: Password recovery is allowed only through the console.
Enabling Password Recovery Using the Application Dialog
To make this procedure non-service affecting, it is recommended that your console be connected to the standby SCM. If
the system is simplex, password re-covery must be done on an active SCM. The

(page 976) follows this procedure. It consists of excerpts from the boot-loader and application dialogs.
To enable password recovery using the application dialog:
1.
Connect your console cable to the target SCM.
2.
Force a reset of the target SCM by shutting it down or by reseating it.
3.
Allow the bootloader dialog to run. When your first see the prompt:

In the second bootloader dialog, when prompted to modify or continue, type
m
for Modify and then press the
Enter
key.
5.
At prompt:
Enable Password Recovery?
type
YES
and press
Enter
.

You are now in password recovery mode. The bootloader dialog then prompts you to accept or reject a series of
default settings. At prompt:
