Note that according to Nyquist, the pixel or voxel size must be at least half of the displayed
localization precision (and resolution) in order to obtain the displayed localization precision.
Localization precision (LP) is not identical to resolution (R), which also depends on the molecular
density (MD). In order to obtain a resolution of 10 nm, the localization precision has to be at least
10 nm as well, but the molecules must be spaced not more than 10/2 nm = 5 nm apart from each
other. In that sense the localization precision sets the maximum resolution possible. Hence if MD
≤
1/2 x LP, than R=LP and if MD
≥
1/2 x LP, than R = 2 x MD. These criteria apply to one, two and
three dimensions.
