Help messages.
Each field on the menus has an associated help message, where the
field and ranges of values to be entered are defined.
Help prompts.
Phrases appearing at the bottom of the SMT screen that tell subscribers
and callers where they are in the voice processor and the options available to
them at that point.
Help screen.
Detailed instructions that appear on a screen in response to pressing a
specific key on the keyboard. The help screen assists system managers through
individual operations.
Hex (hexadecimal).
A numbering system used to condense binary numbers into a more
readable format. Each digit can have values from 0 to 15, using digits 0–9 and
then A (10), B (11), C (12), D (13), E (14), and F (15). A hexadecimal digit equals
four bits and two hexadecimal digits equal one byte.
Hex digit.
Four binary bits.
Hex word.
Two bytes in transposed format.
Highlight.
Enhancing something visually to make it distinct from its background,
usually to show that it has been selected or chosen.
High-order nibble.
The left-most character in a hexadecimal byte.
Hunt group.
A group of lines or trunks all addressed by the same lead number. The
switch, beginning at the first line in the group, hunts through the stations or
trunks in that group, routing the call to the first idle line it finds in the group.
I
ICMB (Information Center
mailboxes).
These mailboxes store recorded information or
announcements that can be accessed by subscribers dialing the mailbox number
or by anyone calling the voice processor. These mailboxes can be configured for
simple voice announcements (listen only) or they can allow callers to record
replies to announcements (listen and reply).
Immediate start.
A signaling protocol used between switches in which the receiving end
must be ready to receive the dialed digits immediately (within 70 ms) after
seizure.
In-band integration.
Form of integration where personal greetings, message-waiting
indication, and return to operator are obtained by sending DTMF tones between
the PBX or switch and the voice processor. In-band describes the way the call ID,
call information, message-waiting, and return-to-operator commands are sent over
the same channel (or band) as the voice. In-band integrations either use a
single-line telephone (2500 set) or a tie-line (E&M) appearance.
In-band signaling.
Signaling made up of tones that are carried within the voice-frequency
band and are carried along the same channel as the voice path.
Information Center mailbox.
See ICMB.
