notification while messenger is in the background: Yes".
4) If you press "Enter", a beep sound is heard when a new message is
received.
If you press “down arrow button” and press "Enter", there is no beep sound,
thus you are not alerted to new messages until you return to the messenger
program and view them.
16.4.3 Instant Message dialog
If you press "Enter" on a contact in your contact list, the instant message
dialog appears, thus opening a conversation window. The instant message
dialog consists of the "history" window, the "input" edit box, and "Send" and
"Close" buttons. The "history" window lists all the messages that have been
sent to and from other contacts. In the "input" edit box, you can type
messages to send to your contact. Move among these controls by pressing
“Tab” or "shift-tab".
When you open the dialog by pressing "Enter" on a contact to send a
message, the "input" edit box is focused when the dialog appears. On the
other hand, if the dialog was opened to read received messages, the
"history" window is focused. In the "input" edit box, you can type one line, as
pressing "Enter", sends the message. You can also move to the "Send"
button, and press "Enter" to send the message. The message is then added
to the "history" window. In the "history" window, for each message, the
nickname of the writer of the message is displayed followed by the content of
the message. Each message is considered as a paragraph.
When you are in the instant message dialog, if the other person sends a
message, the message is displayed in Braille and announced in speech
immediately. If you receive a message while in the instant message dialog,

key again to return to the instant message dialog.
More than one instant message dialog can be opened at the same time. For
example, while in an instant message dialog, if you go to the contact list box
