Pressure-Relief Accumulator—Mode 1
Valco has designed a closed-loop pressure-relief accumulator (Figure C-2). The accumulator is installed on the
discharge side of the fluid regulator. A check valve, which allows adhesive to flow in only one direction, is installed
on the inlet and outlet ports of the accumulator.
The pressure-relief accumulator is activated by a 12VDC, four-way solenoid air valve that is connected to the
minimum-speed circuit of the pattern controller. The accumulator has a 2:1 ratio design so that the pressure forced
from the accumulator will overcome the pressure from a low-pressure pump of 150 pounds or less.
When the machine stops and the pattern control goes below minimum speed, the four-way solenoid de-energizes,
which allows the piston to reverse and fills up the accumulator with adhesive from the output side of the fluid
regulator. The pressure reduces to the minimum pressure that is set on the fluid regulator.
When the pattern control receives an above-minimum-speed signal, the four-way solenoid energizes. The piston in
the accumulator then moves forward, forcing the adhesive back through the input of the fluid regulator. See
