Mechanical Installation of the Encoder
An encoder must be installed in order for the control to determine the speed of the parent machine. For best results,
100 pulses per inch (1 pulse per mm) of product travel should be supplied to the VC350A. If less than 100 pulses
per inch (1 pulse per mm) are supplied, poor resolution may result in pattern placement errors. If more than 100
pulses per inch (25.4 mm) are supplied, the maximum specified speed of 2000 feet/min (610 m/min) must be
reduced.
There are two primary types of encoders:

Wheel-driven encoder
•
Gear-driven encoder
Wheel-Driven Encoder
The wheel-driven encoder (Figures 6-6 and 6-7) is common on folding carton machines and on some envelope
machines. The encoder assembly is driven by a measuring wheel that rides securely on the machine’s drive belt. The
assembly should be mounted so that the measuring wheel rides on a free span of the belt. It should not be mounted
over pulleys or rollers. There should be sufficient tension between the belt and wheel to ensure that the wheel does
not slip.
If using a wheel-driven encoder, a VDD-1000 encoder with a 10-inch measuring wheel is recommended for
imperial measurement systems. A VDD-250 encoder with a 250-mm measuring wheel is recommended for metric
measurement systems. Other options can be used for retrofits of controls with existing encoders (Table 6-1).
