GENERAL  DESCRIPTION

The  In-Line  engine  covered  in this  section is  the  250  cu.  in. 

L

6

  engine used in  10, 20 and  30G-Series truck.

This  section  covers  the  rem oval  and  installation  o f  engine 

assemblies,  th e  rem oval,  installation  and  adjustm ent  o f  some 
sub-assemblies  and  replacem ent  o f   som e  com ponents.  F or 
service  to   all  com ponents  and  sub-assemblies  (after  rem oval) 
and  rem oval  o f  som e  sub-assemblies,  refer  to   Section

 o f  this 

Chassis Overhaul  Manual.

Because  o f   the  interchangeability  and  sim ilarity  o f  m any 

engine  sub-assemblies  and  parts,  typical  illustrations  and 
procedures  are  used  (except  where  specific  illustrations  or 
procedures  are  necessary  to   clarify  th e   o peration).  A lthough 
illustrations  showing  ben ch   o perations  are  used,  m ost  single 
operations,  w hen  n o t  p art  o f   a  general  overhaul,  should  be 
perform ed (if practical)  w ith th e   engine in th e  vehicle.

COMPONENT  REPLACEMENT  AND  ADJUSTMENT

ENGINE  ASSEMBLY

 

Removal

1.  Rem ove  engine  cover and p osition it  o u t  o f way.

2.  D isconnect  b a tte ry   ground  cable  at  engine  block  and  at 

b attery .

3.  D rain  cooling  system   an d   disconnect  heater  hoses  at 

engine; disconnect  radiator hoses at radiator.

4.  D isconnect  au to m atic  transm ission  cooler  lines  at  rad i­

ator.

5.  Rem ove fan guard an d  radiator.

6

.  D isconnect  oil  pressure gauge, if  so  equipped.

7.  Disconnect  engine  wiring  harness  at  dash  panel  junction 

block.

8

.  D isconnect  D elcotron  wires at  rear o f D elcotron.

9.  D isconnect  TCS  system   electrical  leads  at  carburetor 

m ounted  CEC  valve  an d   a t  te m p eratu re  sw itch -rem o v e 

harness from  clips and  position  it  to   one  side.

10.  D isconnect  Evaporation  C ontrol  System   lines  a t  rocker 

arm   cover  and  at  c a rb u re to r-p o sitio n   lines  to   one  side.
