Tire Mounting

When tires are m o u n te d on d irty or corroded rim s, or

w hen they are n o t pro p erly ce n te re d on rim s, the tire bead
m ay “ b in d ” on th e rim , and refuse to seat.

C A U T IO N : A llow ing pressure to continue to build

up w ith in the assembly in an a tte m p t to seat the tire

bead is a D A N G E R O U S P R A C T IC E which can

result in serious injury to the serviceman and a

broken tire bead.

Be Safe!

1. Make sure th a t rim flanges and bead ledge (especially

h um p and radius) areas are sm ooth and clean. Rem ove

any oxidized ru b b er, dried soap solution, rust, heavy
paint, etc. w ith a w ire brush, or, in extrem e cases, a file.

2. L ubricate tire beads, rim flanges, and bead ledge areas

w ith a liberal am o u n t o f th in vegetable oil soap solution,

or approved rubber lu bricant.

3. Insure th a t air pressure build-up during th e bead seating

process is n o t allow ed to exceed 40 pounds pressure. If

beads have n o t seated by th e tim e pressure reaches 40

pounds, assem bly should be deflated, repositioned on
rim , re-lubricated an d re-inflated.

4. Make sure valve core is in serted in valve stem prior to

inflating.

5. Use an extension gauge w ith clip on chuck so air pressure

buildup can be closely w atched and so th a t y o u can stand
well back from th e assem bly during the bead seating
process.

TUBELESS TIRES

Tubeless tires m o u n te d on one piece full drop center rims

are standard on some C hevrolet trucks. These tires have a
safety inner liner w hich if p u n ctu re d , te n d s to cling to th e

p enetrating object form ing a partial seal u n til th e object is
rem oved from th e tire.

The m ounting and dem o u n tin g o f tubeless tru c k tires will

present  no  problem  w hen a  ru b b er lu b rican t,  such as  Ru-G lyde
or  equivalent is  applied  to   tire beads  and rim  flanges.  Ru-G lyde
o r  equivalent  in  ad d itio n   to   m aterially  assisting  in  m ounting
and  d em ounting  also  prevents  rusting  at  th e  tire  sealing  area
and  thus  prevents  tires fro m  adhering to  th e  wheel.

Demounting and Mounting

All tubeless tires used on C hevrolet trucks should be

d em o u n ted   and  m o u n te d   as  described  in  this  section.  Sizes
m ay be  d em o u n ted  using  present  tire m achines or  standard tire
irons  follow ing  th e  same  procedure  em ployed in  servicing tu b e
ty p e  tires.

C A U T IO N :

A hammer, or tools w ith sharp edges,

should never be used to dem ount or m ount tubeless

tires as damage to rim flange or tire sealing bead

may result.

1. With w heel assem bly rem oved from vehicle, inflate th e

tire to recom m ended operating pressure.

2. Check for leaks a t rim bead by placing wheel and tire

horizo n tal  and  allowing w ater  to   stand in groove  betw een
rim   and  tire.  Check  for  large  leaks  by   low ering assem bly
into  w ater  ta n k   or  running w ater  over  tire.
