BRAKE DRUM

A xle Shaft Installation

. Slide axle shaft into place.

C A U T IO N :

Exercise care th at splines on end o f

shaft do not damage oil seal and th at they engage

w ith splines o f differential side gear.

2. Install axle shaft “ C” lock on b u tto n end o f axle shaft

and push shaft o u tw ard so th a t shaft lock seats in
counterbore o f differential side gear.

3. P osition differential pinion shaft through case and

pinions, aligning hole in shaft w ith lock screw hole in
case.

4. Using a new gasket, install carrier cover and torq u e bolts

to specifications.

C A U T IO N :

Make sure both gasket surfaces on

carrier and cover are clean before installing new

gasket. Torque carrier bolts in a crosswise pattern to

ensure uniform draw on cover gasket.

5. Fill axle w ith lu bricant to a level even w ith b o tto m o f

filler hole. See S ection O for proper lubricant.

. Install brake drum and w heel and tire assembly.

7. Low er vehicle and remove from hoist.

Wheel Bolt Replacement (Fig. 9)

Removal

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.

2. Remove w heel and tire and brake drum .
3. Using Tool J-5504 or J-6627 press o u t stud.

Installation

1. Place new studs in axle flange hole. Slightly sta rt stud

serrations in hole by firm ly pressing back o f stud w ith
yo u r hand.

2. Install a lug n u t w ith flat side first (tap e re d face o u t

board). Tighten on lug n u t drawing stud into flange u n til
stud head is b o tto m e d on back side o f flange.

3. Rem ove lug nut.

4. Reinstall brake drum and wheel and tire.

5. Lower vehicle and remove from hoist.

Pinion Flange, Dust Deflector and/or Oil Seal

Replacement

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.

2. Rem ove rear wheels and brake drum s.
