29. Rem ove synchrom esh transm ission and clutch (if so
equipped).
a.
Rem ove clu tch housing rear cover bolts.
b. Rem ove b olts attaching th e clu tch housing to
engine blo ck , th e n rem ove transm ission clu tch h ous­
ing as a unit.
N O T E : Support th e transmission as the last
mounting b o lt is removed and as it is being pulled
away fro m the engine, to prevent damage to clutch
disc.
c. Rem ove starter and clutch housing rear cover.
d . L oosen clu tch m o u n tin g bolts a tu rn a t a tim e (to
prevent d isto rtio n o f clutch cover) u n til th e spring
pressure is released. Rem ove all bolts, clutch disc
and pressure plate assem bly.

30. Rem ove au to m atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a. Lower engine secured b y the hoist, an d support
engine o n blocks.
b. Remove sta rter and converter housing underpan.
c. Rem ove flyw heel-to-converter attaching bolts.
d. S u p p o rt transm ission on blocks.
e. D isconnect th ro ttle linkage and vacuum m o dulator
o n Powerglide. D isconnect d e te n t cable on T urbo
Hydra-M atic.
f. Remove transm ission-to-engine m ounting bolts.
g. With th e hoist attac h ed , rem ove blocks from the
engine only and slowly guide th e engine away from
th e transm ission.
Installation
1. If engine was m o u n te d in an engine stand, a tta c h lifting
ad ap ter to engine, th e n , using lifting device, remove
engine from stand an d perfo rm the following:
•
Install m anual transm ission and clu tch (if so
equipped).
a. Install th e clutch assem bly on flyw heel as outlined
in Section 7.
b. Install clutch housing rear cover and starter.
c. Install th e transm ission and c lu tch housing as o u t­
lined in Section 7.
d. Install clutch housing rear cover bolts an d to rq u e to
specifications.
• Install au to m atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a. Position engine adjacent to th e transm ission and
align converter w ith th e flyw heel.
b. Bolt transm ission to engine th e n raise engine and
transm ission assem bly and install flyw heel to
converter bolts.
c. Install converter housing u nder pan and starter.
d. C o n n e c t t h r o t t l e valve linkage an d vacuum
m od u lato r. C onnect d e te n t cable on T urbo Hydra-
M atic.
2. Raise engine and align m o u n ts o n engine w ith brackets
on crossm em ber—install engine m o u n t th ro u g h b olts.
3. Place w ood block betw een oil pan and crossm em ber to
stabilize pow er train.
4. Rem ove floor jack fro m u nder crossm em ber and position
ja ck pad u n d er transm ission assem bly, using w ood block
a t ja c k pad to p ro tec t transm isssion.
5. Rem ove th e engine lifting device and roll pow er train an d
suspension assem bly under vehicle so th a t crossm em ber is
aligned w ith fram e.

. Slow ly low er th e vehicle, checking o ften to assure th a t
engine com ponents do n o t in terfere w ith vehicle as it is
being low ered, u n til suspension-to-fram e attach in g b o lt
holes are aligned.
7. Install an d securely tig h ten suspension-to-fram e attaching
bolts.

. Install transm ission su p p o rt crossm em ber and remove
floor ja ck from b en e ath th e transm ission. Rem ove block
o f w o o d fro m betw een oil pan and crossm em ber.
9. Raise vehicle on th e hoist and install th e rem aining
suspension-to-fram e attaching b o lts—to rq u e b o lts to
specifications. T orque transm ission to-crossm em ber and
crossm em ber to fram e b olts to specifications.
10. Install propeller shaft as o u tlin ed in S ection 4.
11. C onnect rear brake pipe a t right fram e rail co n n e cto r;
