. C onnect spark plug wiring.
SERVICE IG N IT IO N SYSTEM
1. Rem ove d istrib u to r cap, clean cap and inspect for cracks,
carbon tracks and b urned or co rro d ed term inals. Replace
cap w here necessary (Fig. 3).
2. Clean ro to r and inspect for damage or d eterioration.
Replace ro to r w here necessary.
3. Replace b rittle , oil soaked or dam aged spark plug wires.
Install all wires to p ro p er spark plug. Proper positioning
o f spark plug wires in su pports is im p o rta n t to prevent
cross-firing.
4. T ighten all ignition system connections.
5. Replace or repair any wires th a t are frayed, loose or
dam aged.

. C heck the d istrib u to r centrifugal advance m echanism by
turn in g the d istrib u to r ro to r in a clockwise direction as
far as possible, then releasing the ro to r to see if the
springs return it to th eir retard ed position. I f the ro to r
does n o t retu rn readily, the d istrib u to r m ust be dis­
assem bled and the cause o f the trouble corrected.
7. C heck to see th a t the vacuum co n tro l operates freely by
turning th e m ovable breaker plate counterclockw ise to
see if the spring retu rn s to its retarded position. A ny
stiffness in the o p eratio n o f the vacuum co n tro l will
affect the ignition tim ing. C orrect any in terferen ce or
binding co ndition noted.

. E xam ine distrib u to r p o ints and clean or replace if
necessary.
• C o n tact points w ith an overall gray color and only
slight roughness or pitting need n o t be replaced.
• D irty points should be cleaned w ith a clean point
file.
Use only a few strokes o f a clean, fine-cut
co n tac t file. The file should n o t be used on other
m etals and should n o t be allow ed to becom e greasy
o r dirty. Never use em ery clo th or sandpaper to
clean co n tac t points since particles will em bed and
cause arcing and rapid burning o f points. Do not
a tte m p t to remove all roughness nor dress the point
surfaces dow n sm ooth. Merely rem ove scale or dirt.
• Clean cam lobe w ith cleaning solvent and rotate
cam lu bricator wick 180° as applicable.
• Replace points th a t are b urned or badly pitted .
N O T E : Where prem aturely burned or badly pitted
points are encountered, the ignition system and
engine should be checked to determine the cause o f
trouble so th at it can be elim inated. Unless the
condition causing point burning or pitting is cor­
rected, new points will provide no better service
than the old points. Refer to Section 6 Y fo r an
analysis o f point burning or pitting.
