u ntil th e lifter is on th e heel o f th e cam lobe. A t this
p oint, the push rod will be in its low est position.
4. Set dial indicator on zero, th e n ro ta te the crankshaft
slow ly, or a tta c h an auxiliary sta rte r sw itch and “ b u m p ”
th e engine over, until th e push ro d is in fully raised
position.
C A U T IO N : The distributor prim ary lead must be
disconnected fro m the negative post on the coil.
5. Com pare th e to ta l lift recorded from the dial indicator
w ith specifications.

. C o ntinue to ro ta te th e engine u n til th e indicator reads
zero. This will be a check on th e accuracy o f th e original
indicator reading.
7. If cam shaft readings for all lobes are w ithin specifi­
cations, rem ove dial indicator assembly.
8
. Install a n d adjust valve m echanism as outlined.
Removal
1. Rem ove valve lifters as outlined.
2. Rem ove crankcase fro n t cover as outlined.
3. Rem ove grille as o u tlined in Section 13.
4. Rem ove fuel p u m p push rod as outlined in Section

M.
5. C om plete cam shaft removal as follows:
N O T E : Sprocket is a light f i t on camshaft. If
sprocket does not come o ff easily a light blow on
the low er edge o f the sprocket (w ith a plastic
mallet) should dislodge the sprocket.

. Install tw o 5 /1 6 ” x 18 x 4 ” b olts in cam shaft bolt holes
th e n rem ove cam shaft (Fig. 24V ).
C A U T IO N : A ll camshaft journals are the same
diameter and care must be used in removing cam­
shaft to avoid damage to bearings.
Installation
N O T E : Whenever a new camshaft is installed coat
camshaft lobes w ith " M o ly k o te " or its equivalent.
1. L ubricate cam shaft journals w ith engine oil and install
cam shaft.
2. Install tim ing chain on cam shaft sprocket. H old th e
sprocket vertical w ith th e chain hanging dow n, and align
marks o n cam shaft an d crankshaft sprockets. (R efer to
Fig. 19V and 22V ).
3. Align dow el in cam shaft w ith dow el in hole in cam shaft
sprocket then install sprocket on cam shaft.
4. D raw th e cam shaft sp ro ck et o n to cam shaft using the
m ounting bolts. T orque to specifications.
5. L ubricate tim ing chain w ith engine oil.

7. Install grille as o u tlin ed in Section 13.
8
. Install crankcase fro n t cover as outlined.
9. Install valve lifters as outlined.
Flywheel
Removal
With transm ission a n d /o r clutch housing and clutch
rem oved from engine, rem ove the flyw heel.
Installation
1. Clean th e m ating surfaces o f flyw heel and crankshaft to
m ake certain th e re are n o burrs.
2. Install flyw heel on crankshaft and position to align dowel
hole o f crankshaft flange and flyw heel (Fig. 25 V).

N O T E : On A u to m atic Transmission equipped
engines, the flyw heel must be installed w ith the
flange collar to transmission side (Fig. 2 5 V ).
