11. Install ac tu a to r return spring.
C A U T IO N : Do not pry actuator lever to install
return spring. Ease it in place using the end of a
screwdriver or other suitable fla t tool.
12. I f old brake pull back (re tu rn ) springs are nicked,
d isto rted , o r if strength is d o u b tfu l, install new springs.
13. H ook springs in shoes using T ool J-8049 by installing the
prim ary spring from the shoe over th e anchor pin and
then the spring from th e secondary shoe over the wire
link end (Fig. 26).
14. Pry shoes away fro m th e backing plate and lubricate shoe
c o n tac t surfaces w ith a thin coating o f brake lube (Fig.
25).
C A U T IO N : Be careful to keep lubricant o ff
facings.
15. A fter com pleting installation, make certain th e a c tu a to r
lever functions easily by h and operating the self-adjusting
feature (Fig. 27).
16. F ollow th e above procedure for b o th rear brakes.
17. A djust th e service brakes and th e parking brake as
o u tlin ed u n d er “ M aintenance and A dju stm en ts” in this
section.
18. Install d ru m , w heel and tire, low er vehicle to floor and
te st brake operatio n .
Relining Brake Shoes
If old brake shoes are to be relined, inspect shoes for
disto rtio n and for looseness betw een the rim and web; these
are causes for discarding any shoe. If shoes are serviceable, be
governed by th e follow ing points in installing new linings:
1. Rem ove o ld linings by drilling o u t rivets. P unching rivets
o u t will disto rt shoe rim . T horoughly clean surface o f
shoe rim and file o ff any burrs or high spots.

2. Use C hevrolet brake lining or equivalent and the rivets
included in lining package w hich are o f the correct size.
The rivets m ust fit the holes w ith the solid b o d y o f rivet
extending th rough the shoe rim , b u t no farther.
C A U T IO N : Keep hands clean while handling brake
lining. Do not perm it oil or grease to come in
contact w ith lining.
3. S ta rt riveting at center o f shoe and lining and w ork
tow ard the ends. Use a roll set for riveting; a star set
m ight split the tu b u lar end an d then the rivet w ould n o t
fill the hole. The prim ary lining is shorter than secondary
lining; th erefo re, th e rivet holes a t each end o f the shoe
rim are n o t used.
4. A fter riveting is com pleted, lining m ust seat snugly
against shoe w ith no m ore than .005” separation m idw ay
betw een rivets. Check w ith a .0 0 4 ” (G o) and a .006” (N o
G o) feeler gage.
ANCHOR PIN REPLACEMENT
Removal
1. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
2. Rem ove wheel an d drum as outlined in this section.
3. Rem ove brake shoe pull back springs, link an d guide
plate.
4. Disengage anchor pin lock and rem ove pin from flange
plate (T hreaded ty p e ).
Installation
1. P osition anchor pin to flange plate, install lock washer
and torque pin. L ock by peening over w asher tabs.

section.
2. Install brake shoe guide plate, link and pull back springs.
3. A djust brakes, install drum and w heel as outlined p re­
viously in this section.
4. Low er vehicle an d test brake o peration.

C A U T IO N : Always use denatured alcohol or brake
flu id to clean any wheel cylinder parts. Never use
mineral-base cleaning solvents such as gasoline, kero­
sene, carbon-tetrachloride, acetone, paint thinner or
units of like nature as these solvents deteriorate
rubber parts, causing them to become soft and
swollen in an extrem ely short tim e.
The w heel cylinder b o o ts should be rem oved from a
cylinder body only w hen they are visibly dam aged or leaking
fluid. Wheel cylinders having to rn , c u t, or heat-cracked boots
should be com pletely overhauled.
