DISTR IB U TO R CONDENSER
Performance Diagnosis
The follow ing fo u r facto rs a ffec t condenser perform ance,
and each facto r m ust be considered in m aking any condenser
test.
1. B reakdow n—A failure o f th e insulating m aterial. A direct
sh o rt b etw een th e m etallic elem ents o f the condenser.
This prevents any condenser action.
2. L o w Insulating Resistance (leakage)—Low insulation re
sistance prevents th e condenser from holding a charge.
All condensers are subject to leakage w hich, up to a
certain lim it, is n o t objectionable.
3. High Series R esistance—Excessive resistance in th e con
denser circuit due to b ro k en strands in the condenser
leak or to a defective connection. This will cause b urned
points and ig nition failure u p o n initial starts and a t high
speeds.
4. C apacity—C apacity is determ ined by th e area o f th e
m etallic elem ents an d the insulating and im pregnating
m aterials.
F or a com plete check o f th e condenser, use a tester w hich
will check fo r all o f th e above conditions. Follow th e in stru c
tions given by th e m a n u factu rer o f th e test equipm ent.
Condenser capacity should be .18-.23 m icrofarads.
Replacement
Six Cylinder Engine Distributor (Fig. 1i)
1. Release d istrib u to r cap hold-dow n screws, rem ove cap
and place it o u t o f th e w ork area.
2. Rem ove ro to r and dust shield.
3. D isconnect condenser lead wire from c o n tac t point
quick-disconnect term inal.
4. R em ove condenser attach in g screw, lift condenser from
breaker plate and w ipe breaker plate clean.
5. Install new condenser using reverse o f procedure outlined
above.
Eight Cylinder Engine Distributor
1. Rem ove d istrib u to r cap and ro to r.
2. D isconnect condenser lead (Fig. 2i) from term inal.
3.
Rem ove screw holding condenser bracket to breaker
plate and slide condenser from bracket.
4. To replace condenser reverse th e above procedure.
N O T E : Make sure th at new condenser lead is
installed in proper position (Fig. 2i).
Distributor—Removal
1.
Release the d istrib u to r cap hold-dow n screws, rem ove the
cap and place it clear o f the w ork area.
N O T E :
If necessary, remove secondary leads from
the distributor cap after first marking the cap tow er
fo r the lead to No. 1 cylinder. This w ill aid in the
reinstallation o f leads in the cap.
2. D isconnect th e d istrib u to r prim ary lead from the coil
term inal.
3. Scribe a realignm ent m ark on th e d istrib u to r bow l and
engine in line w ith th e ro to r segm ent.
4. D isconnect external connections (vacuum line, drive
cables, etc.) rem ove th e distributor hold-dow n b o lt and
clam p, remove the d istrib u to r from th e engine. N ote
position o f vacuum advance m echanism relative to the
engine.
C A U T IO N : Avoid rotating the engine w ith the
distributor removed as the ignition tim ing w ill be
upset.
Disassembly
It is advisable to place the d istrib u to r in a distrib u to r
testing m achine or synchroscope prior to disassem bly. When
m ounting distributors for tests, first secure th e gear in the test
drive m echanism , th e n push the d istrib u to r housing dow nw ard
to w ard th e gear to take u p any end play betw een th e gear and
the housing.
Test th e d istrib u to r fo r variation o f spark, correct cen trif
ugal and vacuum advance and condition o f contacts. This test
will give valuable in fo rm atio n on distrib u to r condition and
indicate p arts replacem ent which m ay be necessary. C heck the
area on th e breaker plate ju st b en e a th th e c o n tac t points. A
sm udgy line indicates th a t oil o r crankcase vapors have been
present betw een th e points.
Six Cylinder Engines
R efer to Figure 7i.
1. Rem ove the ro to r and dust shield.
2. Rem ove th e vacuum co n tro l assem bly retaining screws,
d etach th e u n it from th e distrib u to r housing.
3. D isconnect th e prim ary and condenser leads from th e
c o n ta c t p o in t quick disconnect term inal, remove th e
c o n tac t p o in t set attaching screw, condenser attaching
screw. Remove th e poin t set and condenser from th e
breaker plate.
4. Rem ove the breaker plate attaching screws, rem ove th e
breaker plate from th e d istrib u to r housing (Fig. 7i).
N O T E :
Do not disassemble breaker plate any
further.
5. Rem ove the roll pin retaining th e driven gear to th e
m ainshaft, slide the gear from the shaft.
6
. Slide the cam and m ainshaft from the distrib u to r
housing.
7. Remove the weight cover and stop plate screws, remove
the cover, weight springs, weights and slide cam assembly
from the m ainshaft.
