33. Rem ove synchrom esh transm ission and clu tch (if so
equipped).
a.
Rem ove clu tch housing rear cover bolts.
b. Rem ove b o lts attaching th e clutch housing to
engine block, th e n rem ove transm ission and clu tch
housing as a u n it.
N O T E : Support the transmission as the last
m ounting bolt is removed and as it is being pulled
away fro m the engine, to prevent damage to clutch
disc.
c. Rem ove sta rte r an d clu tch housing rear cover.
d. Loosen clutch m ounting b olts a tu rn a t a tim e (to
prevent d isto rtio n o f clutch cover) un til th e spring
pressure is released. Rem ove all bolts, clutch disc
and pressure plate assem bly.
34. Rem ove au to m atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a. Low er engine, secured b y th e hoist, and support
engine on blocks.
b. Rem ove sta rte r and converter housing underpan.
c. Rem ove flyw heel-to-converter attaching bolts.
d. S u p p o rt transm ission on blocks.
e. D isconnect th ro ttle linkage and vacuum m o d u la to r
on Powerglide. D isconnect d eten t cable o n T urbo
Hydra-M atic.
f. Remove transm ission-to-engine m ounting bolts.
g. W ith th e h o ist attac h ed , rem ove blocks from th e
engine only and slowly guide th e engine aw ay from
th e transm ission.
35. M ount engine in engine stand an d rem ove lifting device
and lifting adapter.
Installation
1. I f engine was m o u n te d in an engine stan d , a tta c h lifting 16.
adapter-to-engine, th e n using lifting device, remove
engine fro m stand and perform th e follow ing:

• Install synchrom esh transm ission and clu tch (if so 18.
equipped).
a. Install th e clutch assem bly o n flyw heel as o u tlined 19.
in S ection 7.
b. Install clu tch housing rear cover and starter.
c. Install the transm ission and clutch housing as o u t­
lined in S ection 7.
d. Install clutch housing bolts and to rq u e to specifica­
tions.
• Install au to m atic transm ission (if so equipped).
a. P osition engine adjacent to the transm ission and
align th e converter w ith th e flyw heel.
b. Bolt transm ission to engine and th e n raise engine
and transm ission assem bly and install flyw heel to
converter bolts.
c. Install converter housing underpan and starter.
d. C onnect th ro ttle linkage and vacuum m odulator.
C onnect d e te n t cable on T urbo Hydra-M atic.
2. Raise engine and align m o u n ts on engine w ith brackets
on crossm em ber—install engine m o u n t th ro u g h bolts.
3. Place w o o d block betw een oil pan and crossm em ber to
stabilize pow er train.
4. Rem ove floor ja c k from u nder crossm em ber and position
ja ck pad u n d er transm ission assem bly, using w ood blocks
a t jack pad to p ro te c t transm ission.
5. Rem ove th e lifting device from engine b rackets.

. R oll the pow er train and suspension assem bly under
vehicle so th a t crossm em ber is aligned w ith fram e.
7. Slowly low er th e vehicle, checking o fte n to assure th a t
engine co m p o n en ts do n o t interfere w ith vehicle as it is
being low ered, u n til suspension to fram e attaching b o lt
holes are aligned.

. Install and securely tighten suspension to-fram e attaching
bolts.
9. Install transm ission su p p o rt crossm em ber, and remove
floor ja ck from b en e a th th e transm ission.
10. Raise vehicle o n the h oist and install th e rem aining
suspension-to-fram e attaching b o lts—to rq u e bolts-to-
specifications. T orque transm ission-to-crossm em ber and
crossm em ber to fram e b o lts to specifications.
11. Install propeller shaft as o u tlin ed in S ection 4.
12. C onnect rear brak e pipe at right fram e rail co n n e cto r;
connect fro n t brake pipe at equalizer tee an d connect
rear brake pipe a t left fram e rail connector.
13. Install and to rq u e shock absorber attaching bolts to
specifications. C onnect stabilizer shaft to fram e.
14. Install cross shaft and connect clu tch linkage an d /o r
transm ission linkage as o u tlin ed in S ection 7.
15. C onnect th e follow ing item s:
• Fuel line (fro m ta n k ) at fuel pum p.
• Engine ground strap(s).
• Steering idler arm at fram e; th e n steering pitm an
arm a t steering gear and to rq u e n u t to specifica­
tions.
• B attery positive cable at starter.
• S peedom eter cable at transm ission.
• TCS sw itch a t tran sm issio n -in sta ll TCS wire to clip
at transm ission/clutch housing
• Install exhaust system .
Rem ove w ood blo ck placed betw een crossm em ber and
oil pan.
Low er vehicle on hoist.
C onnect accelerator linkage a t dash panel m o u n te d bell
crank.
C onnect E vaporation C on tro l System lines at rocker arm
cover and at carburetor.
