GENERAL DESCRIPTION
V arious carburetors, designed to m eet the particular re­
q uirem ents o f engine, transm ission and vehicle are used;
therefore, carburetors th a t look alike are n o t always in te r­
c h a n g e a b le . (R efer to carburetor p art num ber and/or
specifications.)
This Section covers rem oval, installation and adjustm ent
(on engine) o f carburetors. Also covered in this section are
m aintenance procedures for th ro ttle linkages and fuel filters.

MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE PROCEDURES
C h o k e — Choke m echanism should be checked for free
o peration. A binding co n d itio n m ay have developed from
petroleum gum fo rm atio n on th e choke shaft or from damage.
Choke shafts can usually be cleaned w ith o u t disassembly by
using U nited Delco X

C onditioner or equivalent.
Bolts, Carburetor to
M an ifo ld -C arb u re to r attaching bolts
and/or n u ts should be carefully adjusted to correct torque to
com pensate fo r com pression o f gasket at first 4 m onths or
6,000
miles o f vehicle o p era tio n only.
F ilte r-C a rb u re to r and/or Fuel Pump—
A clogged carburetor or
fuel p um p filter m ay restrict fuel flow or bypass foreign
m aterial in to carb u reto r depending u p o n type used. Replace
clogged filters. Also replace filters each 12,000 miles or 12
m onths, w hichever occurs first.
CEC Valve, or V acuum Advance Solenoid, and Hoses—
The
vacuum p o rtio n o f eith er o f these valves should be checked,
w ith the transm ission in neu tral, by using a vacuum gauge
a ttac h ed to the valve (o r solenoid) d istrib u to r connector. With
the engine at fast idle, the vacuum gauge should read zero. The
electrical p o rtio n o f the solenoid or valve m ay be checked by
applying

volts across its electrical term inals, w hich should
result in a vacuum reading on the gauge (except on Vega where
the results are exactly o p p o site—a vacuum reading should be
o b tain ed only while the solenoid or valve is n o t energized). An
inoperative or leaking solenoid or valve should be replaced.
All hoses and wires should be carefully inspected fo r correct
ro uting an d to m ake certain th a t th ey are intact.
Idle Stop S o le n o id -T h e idle stop solenoid should be checked
to assure th a t it perm its the th ro ttle plate to close further
when the ignition sw itch is tu rn ed “ o ff.” An inoperative
solenoid should be replaced.
