GAUGE SET
The gauge set (fig. 21) is an integral p art o f the J-8393
Charging S tation. Is it used w hen purging, evacuating, charging
or diagnosing tro u b le in th e system . T he gauge a t th e left is
know n as the low pressure gauge. The face is graduated in to
pounds o f pressure an d , in th e o pposite d irection, in inches o f
vacuum . This is the gauge th a t should always be used in
checking pressures o n th e low pressure side o f th e system .
When all p arts o f th e system are functioning p ro p erly the
refrigerant pressure on th e low pressure side never falls below
0 pounds pressure. H ow ever, several abnorm al co nditions can
occur th a t will cause th e low pressure to fall in to a partial
vacuum . T herefo re, a low pressure gauge is required.
The high pressure gauge is used for checking pressures on
the high pressure side o f th e system .
The hand s h u to ff valves on th e gauge m anifold do n o t
co n tro l th e opening or closing o f f o f pressure to the gauges.
T hey m erely close each opening to th e center co n n e cto r and
to each o th e r. D uring m o st diagnosing and service operations,
th e valves m ust be closed. B o th valves will be o pen at the same
tim e during purging, evacuating an d charging operations.
The charging sta tio n provides tw o flexible lines fo r c o n n e ct­
ing th e gauge set to the system com ponents.
V A C U U M PUMP
A vacuum pum p should be used for evacuating air and
m oisture from th e air co n d itio n in g system .
The vacuum pum p (fig. 22 ) is a co m p o n en t p a rt o f
Charging S tatio n J-8 3 9 3 , described previously.
C A U T IO N : The fo llo w in g precautions should be
observed relative to the operation and maintenance
o f this pump.
• Make sure dust cap o n discharge o u tle t o f vacuum pum p
is rem oved before operating.
• K eep all openings capped w hen n o t in use to avoid
m oisture being draw n in to th e system .

• Oil should be changed after every 250 h o u rs o f norm al
operatio n .
To change oil, simply unscrew h ex n u t located o n back side
o f pu m p , tilt backw ard an d drain o u t oil (fig. 22). Recharge
w ith 8 ounces o f vacuum pum p oil, Frigidaire 150 or equiva­
lent (fig. 22). I f yo u desire to flush o u t th e p u m p , use the
same ty p e clean oil. Do n o t use solvent.
N O T E : Im proper lubrication w ill shorten pump
life.
• I f this pum p is subjected to extrem e o r prolonged cold,
allow it to rem ain indoors until oil has reached app ro x i­
m ate ro o m tem p eratu re. F ailure to w arm oil will result in
a blow n fuse
