1. Install the toe pan seal o n to the colum n ja ck e t.
2. L ubricate all bearing surfaces on the shift tu b e .
3. Place the felt seal o n to th e shift tube (n ex t to spring) and
th e n place th e sh ift tube in th e jack et.
4. 3 —Speed Columns— T em porarily install spacer, 1 st-reverse
shift lever and low er adjusting ring. Place a block o f w ood
on top o f th e adjusting ring and tap until the shift tube
b o tto m s. Rem ove adjusting ring, shift lever and spacer.
N O T E : T he shift tube spring retainer must be
bottom ed against the jacket stops.
Autom atic Columns— Align the three holes in the selector
p late w ith the three holes in the ja c k e t, position the
clam ping ring and install the three screws.
5. 3-Speed Columns— L ubricate and install the spacer and

st-reverse shift lever (tang o f lever tow ards to p o f
colum n).

. Install low er bearing in th e adjusting ring and then install
th e adjusting ring, clam p and screws.
7. Install th e shift lever housing seat and bushing to upper
en d o f housing.
8
. T hread directional signal sw itch wiring harness through
th e sw itch and shift lever housings, lubricate the inner
diam eter o f the shift housing, and then place the shift
lever housing o n to the u p p er end o f the colum n.
9. Install th e switch housing plastic washer assem bly. Press
th e upper bearing into th e sw itch c o n tac t su pport.
10. Install the directional signal sw itch housing, con tact
su p p o rt, bearing and sw itch and to rq u e the sw itch screws
to 25 in. lbs.
11. Install the colum n wiring harness cover.
12. Install the directional signal and gearshift levers.
13. A djust th e shift tube as outlined under “ S hifter T ube
A d ju stm en t.”
14. Loosely install th e low er bearing preload spring and
clam p o n to th e steering shaft.
15. Slide the steering shaft assem bly u p th rough th e colum n
assem bly. Install the directional signal cancelling cam ,
steering shaft n u t and flat w asher.
Installation—M andatory Sequence
1. A djust the colum n low er bearing preload by positioning
the spring and clam p to m aintain th e dim ension as show n
in Figure 4.
2. Install the plastic spacers o n to th e flexible coupling
alignm ent pins.
3. F ro m inside the vehicle, carefully insert th e low er end o f
the colum n through the to e pan opening, guiding the
steering shaft flange o nto the flexible coupling. Install
and torq u e the flange to coupling bolts.
C A U T IO N : The steering coupling to steering shaft
fastener is an im portant attaching part in that it
could affect the perform ance o f vital components
and systems, and/or could result in major repair
expense. It must be replaced w ith one of the same
part number or w ith an equivalent part if replace­
m ent becomes necessary. Do not use a replacement
part of lesser q uality or substitute design. Torque
values must be used as specified during reassembly
to assure proper retention o f this part.
