C A U T IO N : Where steel to alum inum connections
are being made, use torque fo r alum inum tubing.
Hose Clamps
When hose clam p connections are en c o u n te re d , special
procedures are necessary for b o th rem oval and installation.
Removal
1. C arefully, w ith a sharp kn ife, m ake an angle c u t in the
hose as show n in Figure 29. This should loosen the hose
so th a t it m ay be w orked o ff th e fitting.
2. C ut o ff slit end o f hose.
C A U T IO N : Use only approved refrigeration hose.
Never use heater hose. Use extrem e care not to nick
or score the sealing beads when cutting o ff the hose.
C utting the hose lengthwise may result in this
problem .
Installation
1. C oat tu b e an d hose w ith clean refrigeration oil.
2. C arefully insert hose over the three beads on th e fitting
and dow n as far as th e fo u rth , or locating bead. Hose
m ust b u tt against this fo u rth bead.
C A U T IO N : Use no sealer o f any kind.
3. Install clam ps on hose, hooking the locating arm s over
th e cut end o f th e hose.
4. T ighten th e hose clam p screw to 35-42 in. lbs. to rq u e.
DO NOT R ETO R Q U E. The clam p screw to rq u e will
norm ally decrease as th e hose conform s to the force o f
th e clam p. The screw should be re to rq u e d only if its
to rq u e falls below 10 in. lbs. In this case, reto rq u e to
20-25 in. lbs. F u rth e r tightening m ay dam age th e hose.
REPAIR OF R E F R IG E R A N T LEAKS
A ny refrigerant leaks fo u n d in th e system should be
repaired in th e m anner given below:
Leaks at "O " Ring Connection
1. Check th e to rq u e on th e fittin g and, if to o loose, tighten
to the p roper to rq u e . Always use a backing w rench to
prevent tw isting and dam age to the “ 0 ” ring. Do n o t
overtighten. Again leak te st the jo in t.
2. I f th e leak is still presen t, discharge th e refrigerant fro m
th e system as described under “ Evacuating and Charging
P rocedures.”
3. Inspect th e “ O ” ring and th e fitting and replace if
dam aged in any w ay. C oat the “ 0 ” ring w ith clean
refrigeration oil and install carefully.
4. R eto rq u e th e fittin g , using a backing w rench.
5. E vacuate, charge and check the system .
Leaks at Hose Clamp Connection
1. Check th e tightness o f the clam p itself a n d tighten if
necessary. R echeck for leak.
2. I f leak has n o t been corrected, discharge the system and
loosen clam p an d rem ove hose from co n n e ctio n . Inspect
co n d itio n o f hose and connector. Replace scored or
dam aged parts.
3. D ip end o f new hose in clean refrigeration oil an d
carefully reinstall over co n n e cto r. Never push end o f hose
b ey o n d th e locating bead. P roperly to rq u e the clam p.
4. E vacuate, charge and check the system .
COMPRESSOR LEAKS
I f leaks are lo c ate d aro u n d the com pressor sh a ft seal or
shell, replacem ent o f necessary seals should b e m ade as
o u tlin ed u nder “ C om pressor” in th e Chassis O verhaul Shop
M anual.
