N O T E : Oil pum p should slide easily into place, if
not, remove and reposition slot to align w ith dis­
trib u to r tang.
2. Install oil pan as outlined.
O IL SEAL (REAR M A IN )
Replacement
N O T E : Always replace the upper and low er seal as
a unit. Install seal w ith lip facing fro n t of engine.
The rear m ain bearing oil seal can be replaced (b o th halves)
w ith o u t removal o f th e crankshaft. E xtrem e care should be
exercised w hen installing this seal to p ro te c t the sealing bead
located in th e channel on the outside diam eter o f the seal. An
installation to o l (Fig. 9 L ), can be used to p ro te c t th e seal bead
w hen positioning u pper h alf o f seal betw een crankshaft and
block as follows.
1. W ith the oil pan an d oil pum p rem oved, rem ove the rear
m ain bearing cap.
2. Rem ove oil seal from th e bearing cap by prying from the
b o tto m w ith a small screw driver (Fig. 10L).
3. T o remove the u pper h alf o f the seal, use a small ham m er

to ta p a brass pin punch on one end o f seal un til it
p rotrudes far enough to be rem oved w ith pliers (Fig.
11L).
4. Clean all sealant and foreign m aterial from cylinder case
bearing cap and cran k sh aft, using a non-abrasive cleaner.
5. In sp ect com ponents for nicks, scratches, burrs and
m achining defects at all sealing surfaces, case assembly
and crankshaft.

. C oat seal tips and seal bead w ith light engine oil - keep oil
o ff seal m ating ends.
7. P osition tip o f to o l betw een crankshaft and seal seat in
cylinder case.

. P osition seal betw een crankshaft and tip o f to o l so th a t
seal bead contacts tip o f tool.
N O T E : Make sure th at oil-seal lip is positioned
tow ard fro n t o f engine.
9. Roll seal around crankshaft using to o l as a “ shoe-horn”
