D ue to th e w eight o f th e tire and w heel assem bly it is
recom m ended th a t th e y be rem oved from h u b before lu b ric at­
ing bearings to prevent damage to oil seal. T hen rem ove the
fro n t wheel h u b to lubricate the bearings. The bearings should
be thoroughly cleaned before repacking w ith lubricant.
F ro n t wheels are equipped w ith tap ered roller bearings on
all trucks. Wheel bearings should be lubricated every 2 4,000
miles. Do n o t m ix w heel bearing lubricants.
C A U T IO N : "L on g F ib re " type greases should not
be used on roller bearing fro n t wheels.
Rear
The rear w heel bearings receive their lub ricatio n from the
rear axle. W hen installing bearings w hich have been cleaned,
prelube w ith w heel bearing grease.
BRAKE MASTER C Y LIN D E R
C heck m aster cylinder fluid level in b o th reservoirs every
6,000 miles o r 4 m onths. I f the fluid is low in the reservoir, it
should be filled to a p o in t ab o u t 1 /4 ” from th e to p rear o f
each reservoir w ith Delco Suprem e No. 11 H ydraulic Brake
Fluid.
BRAKE A N D CLUTCH PEDAL SPRINGS
L ubricate brake an d clutch pedal springs every 6,000 miles
or 4 m onths w ith engine oil for all m odels.
PARKING BRAKE
Every 6 ,0 0 0 miles or 4 m onths clean and lubricate all
parking brake pivot p o in ts w ith w ater resistant EP chassis
lubricant w hich m eets G eneral M otors S pecification GM
6 0 3 1M.
STEERING
M A N U A L STEERING GEAR
The steering gear is factory-filled w ith steering gear lu b ­
ricant. Seasonal change o f this lubricant should n o t be
perform ed and the housing should n o t be drained—
no lubrica­
tion is required fo r the life o f the steering gear.
Every 3 6 ,0 0 0 m iles, th e gear should be inspected fo r seal
leakage (actual solid grease—n o t ju st oily film ). I f a seal is
replaced or the gear is overhauled, the gear housing should be
refilled w ith # 1 0 5 1 0 5 2 (13 oz. container) Steering Gear
L u b rican t w hich m eets GM Specification GM 4673M , or its
equivalent.
N O T E : Do not use EP Chassis Lube, which meets
G M Specification GM 6 0 3 1 M , to lubricate th e gear.
DO N O T O V E R -F IL L the gear housing.
N O T E : Lubricate interm ediate steering shaft w ith
water resistant EP chassis lubricant which meets
General Motors Specification # G M 6 0 3 1 M every
6 ,0 0 0 miles or 4 months on P-10 models only.
POWER STEERING SYSTEM
Check th e fluid level in th e pum p reservoir a t each oil
change period. A dd GM Pow er Steering F lu id as necessary to
bring level to p ro p er range on filler cap in d ic ato r depending
up o n fluid tem p eratu re.
I f at operating te m p eratu re (approxim ately 1 5 0 °F —h o t to
the to u ch ), fluid should be betw een “ H O T ” and “ COLD”
m arks.
I f at ro o m te m p eratu re (approxim ately 70° F ), fluid should
be betw een “ A D D ” and “ CO LD ” m arks. Use DEXRON®
A utom atic Transm ission F luid if GM Power Steering F luid is
n o t available. F luid does n o t require periodic changing.
STEERING LINKAG E AND SUSPENSION
M aintain correct fro n t end alignm ent to provide easy
steering, longer tire life, and driving stability.
Check co n tro l arm bushings and ball jo in ts for w ear.
L ubricate tie rods, u pper and low er co n tro l arm s, and ball
jo in ts a t fittings w ith w ater resistant EP chassis lubricant
w hich m eets G eneral M otors S pecification GM 6 0 3 1M every
6,000 miles or 4 m onths.
N O T E : Ball joints must be at + 1 0 ° F . or more
before lubricating.
K eep spring to axle U bolts and shackle b o lts properly
tightened (see S pecifications Section for torque recom m enda­
tions). C heck U b o lt n u ts after th e first 1,000 miles o f
o peration if th e U b o lt or U b o lt n u ts are changed in service.
HOOD LATCH AND HOOD HINGE
Every 6,000 m iles or 4 m o n th s, w hichever occurs first,
lubricate h o o d latch assem bly and h o o d hinge assembly as
follows:
1. Wipe o ff any accum ulation o f d irt or contam ination on
latch parts.
2. A pply L ubriplate or equivalent to la tch p ilo t bolts and
latch locking plate.
3. A pply light engine oil to all p ivot points in release
m echanism , as well as prim ary and secondary latch
m echanism s.
4. L ubricate ho o d hinges.
5. Make h o o d hinge and latch m echanism functional check
to assure the assem bly is w orking correctly.
