R E FR IG E R A N T HOSE FA ILU R E
A fter a leak or ru p tu re has occurred in a refrigerant hose, or
if a fittin g has loosened an d caused a considerable loss o f
refrigerant and oil, th e en tire system should be evacuated and
recharged after repairs have been m ade. I f th e system has been
open to atm osphere for any prolonged perio d o f tim e the
receiver-dehydrator should be replaced.
These system s in c o rp o rate com pressor inlet and o u tle t
hoses w hich are swaged to th e com pressor co n n e cto r block
inlet and o u tle t lines.
Because o f th e ex trem e length o f th e hoses on these
system s, hose leaks m ay be repaired using th e following
procedure:
1. Locate th e leak. This m ay require rem oving th e body
inner side panels to gain access to th e hoses o n the C-63
system .
2. Discharge th e system .
3. C ut o u t th e leaking p o rtio n o f th e hose, m aking sure th a t
all o f th e failed p o rtio n is rem oved. I f only a very small
p o rtio n o f th e hose was rem oved, it m ay be possible to
splice the tw o ends to g eth er using a special hose c o n
necto r and tw o hose clam ps. I f several inches o f hose
m ust be rem oved, a new piece o f hose should be spliced
in using tw o co n n ecto rs an d four hose clam ps. Dip the
ends o f th e hoses in clean refrigeration oil before in
stalling the hoses o n to th e co n n e cto r. Never push the end
o f th e hose b e y o n d th e locating bead o f th e co n n ecto r.
T orque the clam p to 35-42 in. lbs.
C A U T IO N :
Be sure to replace the hose in th e body
in the same manner as when removed. If the hose
protective grommets are badly m utilated, they
should be replaced.
4. E vacuate, charge an d check th e system .

Removal
1. D isconnect b a tte ry gro u n d cable.
2. D isconnect com pressor clu tch co n n ecto r.
3. Purge th e system o f refrigerant.
4. Release the belt ten sio n a t th e idler pulley and remove
the b elt fro m the com pressor pulley. O n som e vehicles it
m ay be necessary to rem ove the crankshaft pulley in
o rder to rem ove the b elt.
5. R em ove th e fro n t air co n ditioning d istrib u to r duct de
scribed later in this section.
6. R em ove th e tw o b o lts and tw o clam ps th a t hold the
engine cover and rem ove the cover.
7. R em ove the air cleaner to aid access to the com pressor.
8.
Rem ove fittin g and m uffler assem bly and cap o r tape all
open connections.
9. Rem ove th e nuts and b o lts attach in g th e com pressor to
the bracket.
10. R em ove th e engine oil tu b e su p p o rt bracket b o lt and n u t
from the com pressor, also com pressor clutch ground
lead.
11. Rem ove b o lt and n u t holding m uffler assem bly to fro n t
o f com pressor (also holds vacuum line on pow er assisted
brake equipped vehicles, if necessary, rem ove vacuum
hose a t m anifold end).
Before beginning any com pressor disassem bly, drain and
m easure oil in th e com pressor. C heck for evidence o f c o n
ta m in a tio n to determ ine if rem ainder o f system requires
servicing. C om pressor Servicing in fo rm atio n is located in the
Chassis O verhaul Manual.
Installation
1. If the oil drained fro m the com pressor show ed no
evidence o f co n tam in atio n , replace a like am o u n t o f fresh
refrigeration oil in to th e com pressor before reinstallation.
I f it was necessary to service th e entire system because o f
excessive contam ination in th e oil rem oved, install a full
charge o f fresh refrigeration oil in the com pressor. (See
C hecking Com pressor Oil Charge in the Service M anual.)
2. P osition com pressor on the m o u n tin g bracket and install
all n u ts, bolts, lock washers, and m o u n t oil dip stick
tu b e, m uffler, vacuum brake hose ( if equipped), and
ground wire.
3. Install the co n n ecto r assem bly to the com pressor rear
head, using new “ 0 ” rings c o a te d w ith clean refrigeration
oil.
4. C onnect the electrical lead to the coil and install and
adjust com pressor b e lt, using idler pulley. See “ C om
pressor Belt Tension A dju stm en t.”
5. E vacuate, charge and check the system .
6. Replace air cleaner, engine cover and air d istrib u to r duct.
Compressor Belt Tension Adjustment (Fig. 30)
A djust th e com pressor belt to th e specifications show n in
th e Tune-U p chart in the Engine section o f th e Service M anual.
N O T E : On some vehicles it may be necessary to
increase idler pulley slack adjustm ent. This may be
accomplished by (1) Remove and discard the idler
adjustment b olt. (2) Remove the idler backing plate
and elongate all 3 adjusting slots 1 /2 inch inboard or
