V IS U A L INSPECTION
T he first step in testing th e B attery should be a visual
inspection, w hich very o fte n will save tim e an d expense in
determ ining B attery cond itio n .
• C heck the outside o f the B attery for a b ro k en o r cracked
case o r a b ro k en or cracked cover. I f any damage is
evident, th e B attery should be replaced.
• N ote th e elec tro ly te level. Levels th a t are to o low o r to o
high m ay cause p o o r p erform ance, as covered in the
section e n title d “Periodic Servicing.”
• C heck for loose cable con n ectio n s, an d for evidence o f
corrosion as covered in section en title d “ Periodic Servic
ing.” C orrect as required b efo re proceeding w ith tests.
SPECIFIC G R A V IT Y READINGS
A h y d ro m eter can be used to m easure th e specific gravity
o f th e electrolyte in each cell (Fig. 7b).
T he h y d ro m eter m easures the percentage o f sulphuric acid
in the b a tte ry electro ly te in term s o f specific gravity. As a
b a tte ry d rops fro m a charged to a discharged co n d itio n , the
acid leaves th e solution and enters th e plates, causing a
decrease in specific gravity o f electro ly te. A n indication o f the
co n c en tra tio n o f the electrolyte is o b tain ed w ith a h y d ro m
eter.
When using a h y d ro m e te r, observe the follow ing points:
1. H y d ro m ete r m ust be clean, inside and o u t, to insure an
accurate reading.
2. H ydrom eter readings m ust never be tak en im m ediately
a fte r w ater has been added. The w ater m u st be
th o ro u g h ly m ixed w ith th e electro ly te by charging for at
least 15 m inutes a t a rate high enough to cause vigorous
gassing.
charging rate in am peres all cells are gassing freely and no
change in specific gravity occurs. F o r th e m ost satisfactory
charging, th e low er charging rates in am peres are recom
m ended.
F ull charge specific gravity is 1.260-1.280 corrected for
tem p eratu re w ith elec tro ly te level at split ring.
3. I f h y d ro m eter has built-in th e rm o m ete r, draw liquid in to
it several tim es to insure correct tem p eratu re before
taking reading.
4. H old h y d ro m eter vertically and draw in ju st enough
liquid from b a tte ry cell so th a t flo at is free floating. H old
h y d ro m eter a t eye level so th a t flo at is vertical and free
o f o u te r tu b e , th e n take reading a t surface o f liquid.
D isregard th e curvature w here th e liquid rises against
float stem due to surface tension.
5. A void dropping b a tte ry fluid o n car o r clothing as it is
extrem ely corrosive. A ny fluid th a t drops should be
w ashed o f f im m ediately w ith baking soda solution.
The specific gravity o f th e electro ly te varies n o t only w ith
th e percentage o f acid in th e liq u id b u t also w ith tem p eratu re.
As tem p eratu re increases, the electro ly te expands so th a t the
specific gravity is reduced. As te m p eratu re drops, the electro
ly te co n tra cts so th a t th e specific gravity increases. Unless
these variations in specific gravity are tak en in to ac co u n t, the
specific gravity o b tain ed b y th e h y d ro m eter m ay n o t give a
tru e indication o f th e co n c e n tra tio n o f acid in th e electrolyte.
A fully charged B attery will have a specific gravity reading
o f approxim ately 1.270 a t an electro ly te tem p eratu re o f 80°F .
I f the electrolyte tem p eratu re is above or below 8 0 °F .,
additions o r subtractions m ust be m ade in order to o b ta in a
h y d ro m eter reading co rrec ted to the 80° F . standard. F o r every
10° above 8 0 °F ., add fo u r specific gravity p o in ts (.0 0 4 ) to the
h y d ro m eter reading. E xam ple: A h y d ro m eter reading o f
1.260 at 1 10°F. w ould be 1.272 co rrected to 80°F'., indicating
a fully charged B attery. F o r every 10° below 8 0 °F ., subtract
fo u r p oints (.0 0 2 ) from th e reading. E xam ple: A h ydrom eter
reading o f 1.272 a t 0 °F . w ould be 1.240 co rrected to 8 0 °F .,
indicating a partially charged B attery.
SPECIFIC G R A V IT Y CELL COMPARISON TEST
This te st m ay be used w hen an in stru m e n t tester is n o t
available. T o perfo rm this test m easure th e specific gravity o f
each cell, regardless o f state o f charge, and in te rp re t th e results
as follows:
• I f specific gravity readings show a difference betw een the
highest an d low est cell o f .050 (5 0 p oints) o r m o re, the
B attery is defective a n d should be replaced.
