Installation tool must remain in posi

tion until seal is properly positioned w ith both ends

flush w ith block.

10. Rem ove to o l, being careful not to w ithdraw seal.
11. Install seal h a lf in bearing cap, again using tool as a

“ shoe-horn” , feeding seal in to cap using light pressure
w ith th u m b and finger.

12. Install bearing cap to case w ith sealant applied to the

cap-to-case in terface being careful to keep sealant o ff the
seal split line (Fig. 12L).

13. Install the rear m ain bearing cap (w ith new seal) and

to rq u e to specifications.

TO R SIO N A L DAMPER

Removal

1. Drain radiator and disconnect radiator hoses at radiator.

2. Rem ove rad ia to r co re, as o u tlin ed in S ection 13.
3. Rem ove fan belt and (if so equipped) accessory drive

pulley and belt.

4. Install Tool J-23523 (supersedes J-6978) to dam per and

tu rn puller screw to remove dam per (Fig. 13L). Remove
tool from dam per.

Installation

C A U T IO N :

The inertia weight section o f the to r

sional damper is assembled to the hub w ith a rubber

typ e m aterial. The installation procedures (w ith

proper to o l) must be fo llo w ed o r m ovement o f the

inertia weight section on the hub will destroy the

tuning o f the torsional damper.

3. Install fan belt and adjust using strand tension gauge.
4. If so equip p ed , install accessory drive pulley and belt.

5. Install rad iato r core as o u tlin ed in Section 13.

. C onnect rad iato r hoses.

7. Fill cooling system and check for leaks.

CRANKCASE FRO NT COVER

Removal

1. Rem ove oil pan as o utlined.

2. Rem ove crankshaft pulley and torsional dam per as

outlined.

3. Rem ove crankshaft fro n t cover attach in g screws, remove

cover and gasket.
