GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The charging system includes the b atte ry , generator, regula­
to r, telltale light, and necessary wiring to connect these
com ponents. The D elcotron is offered as standard equipm ent,
although there are various capacities available on all models.
The D elcotron continuous o u tp u t A.C. generator (Fig. lc )
consists o f tw o m ajor parts, a sta to r and a ro to r. The sta to r is
com posed o f a large num ber o f windings assem bled on the
inside o f a lam inated core th a t is attach ed to th e generator
fram e. The ro to r revolves w ithin the sta to r on bearings located
in each end fram e. Two brushes are required to carry current
th ro u g h the tw o slip rings to the field coils w ound concentric
w ith th e shaft o f the ro to r. Six rectifier diodes, contained in a
rectifier bridge, are m ounted in the slip ring end fram e and are
jo in ed to the sta to r winding. The diodes change th e D elcotron
A.C. current to D.C. current.
A double contact tw o u n it ty p e regulator is available on
Chevy Van m odels. The fu nction o f the regulator in the
charging system is to lim it th e generator voltage to a pre-set
value by controlling the generator field current.
The double contact u n it uses the field relay to tu rn o ut the
indicator lamp. The relay u n it allows the lam p to light (as a
bulb check) w ith the ignition key on and engine n o t running.
When the engine is started an d the generator begins to charge,
th e indicator light goes o u t indicating th a t the system is
operating norm ally.
