Assembly—T ilt Columns
N O T E : When lubricating components during the
fo llo w in g installation sequence, use a general
purpose lith ium soap grease.
1. Install th e dash panel seal, m ounting p late and th e
in stru m e n t panel seal o n th e colum n.
2. C olum n S hift M odels - Press a new shift lever spring in to
the shift lever housing.
3. Slide the shift lever housing over the upper end o f the
colum n.
4. Place the wave w asher and lock plate in position. Work
th e lock plate in to the notches by tipping th e plate
tow ard th e housing (com pressing the wave w asher) at th e
o p en side o f the colum n. L ubricate the lock plate and
u p p er end o f the shift tube.
5. Carefully install th e shift tu b e into th e low er end o f th e
colum n (m ake sure th e foam seal is at the low er en d o f
th e shift tube). Align th e keyw ay in the tu b e w ith the
k ey in the shift lever housing and com plete installation o f
th e shift tube using Tool J-22549 (fig. 24). The shift
lever housing key m ust b o tto m in the shift tu b e slot to
be fully installed. Rem ove Tool J-22549 from th e col­
u m n . Lubricate and push foam seal in flush w ith colum n
housing.
C A U T IO N : Do N o t ham m er or force the tube
when installing in the column.

. Pull up o n th e shift lever housing (to com press the wave
w asher) and install th e th ru st washer and retaining ring.
Be sure th e ring is seated in b o th slots o f the shift tube.
7. L ubricate the I.D. o f th e bearing housing su p p o rt and
install the su pport, aligning th e b o lt holes in th e support
w ith th e b o lt holes in th e lock plate. Install th e four
su p p o rt screws and to rq u e to 45 in. lbs.

. Assem ble th e steering shaft as follows:
a. L ubricate and assemble the centering spheres and
preload spring.

b . Install th e spheres into th e upper (sh o rt) shaft and
ro ta te
90°.
c. Install th e low er shaft 90° to th e u pper shaft and
over the centering spheres. Slow ly straighten the
shafts while com pressing th e preload spring.

Install the shaft assem bly in to th e housing from the
u p p er end.
10. Install the low er bearing and adapter, bearing reinforce­
m en t, wire clip, p o t jo in t coupling and low er shaft as
described u n d er “ L ow er Bearing In stallatio n ” .

1. Assemble th e bearing housing as follows:
a. Press th e new u pper and low er bearing races into
the bearing housing.
b. L ubricate and install th e bearings in to th e bearing
races.
c. Place th e lock shoe springs in position in the
housing. Install each shoe in place and com press th e
spring until a suitable size straight p unch can be
used to hold th e shoes in position (it m ay be
necessary to acquire assistance to install th e shoes).
Once th e shoes are in place, drive in the shoe
retaining pin.
d. Install the shoe release lever and drive in th e pivot
pin.
e. Install th e tilt release lever.
f. L ubricate th e shoes and release lever.
12. Install the bearing housing assem bly to the su pport. Hold
th e tilt release lever in the “ u p ” position u n til th e shoes
nave fully engaged th e support. L ubricate and install the
bearing housing pivot pins. Press the pins in flush w ith
th e housing.
13.
Place the housing in the full “ u p ” position and then
install tilt spring and retainer (tap e re d end o f spring
first). Push into the housing approxim ately
3/16”
and
ro ta te co u n ter clockwise

turn.
14.
L ubricate and install the u p p er bearing u p p er race, race
seat and lo cknut. Tighten the lo c k n u t (using Socket
J-22599)
to rem ove the lash and th e n fu rth e r tighten
1/16
to
1/8
o f a tu rn (colum n m ust be in straight-ahead
p osition).
15. Rem ove th e tilt release lever.
