loosen ball stu d nuts. Free steering knuckle from ball
stu d s by installing Special T ool J-23742. Rem ove ball
stu d n u ts and w ithdraw steering knuckle.
Installation
C A U T IO N : A ll steering knuckle/steering arm a t­
tachments, including anchor pin, are im portant
attaching part in th at it could affect the p erfo rm ­
ance o f vital components and systems, and/or could
result in major repair expense. I t must be replaced
w ith one o f the same part number or w ith an
equivalent part if replacement becomes necessary.
Do not use a replacem ent part o f lesser q uality or
substitute design. Torque values must be used as
specified during reassembly to assure proper re­
ten tion o f this part.
1. Place steering knuckle in positio n and insert u pper and
low er ball studs in to knuckle bosses.
C A U T IO N : Steering knuckle hole, ball stud and
n ut should be free o f d irt and grease before
tightening nut.
2. Install ball stud nuts an d tighten n u t to specifications.
(See S pecification S ection.)
N O T E : I f necessary, tighten one more notch to
insert cotter pins. Do not loosen nut to insert cotter
pin. R efer to Ball Jo int te x t fo r proper nut
installation.
3. Reverse above rem oval p rocedure, a n d tighten splash
shield m o u n tin g b o lt. T ighten tw o caliper assembly
m o u n tin g bolts to 35 ft. lb. torque.
4. A djust w heel bearings as o u tlin ed u nder F ro n t Wheel
Bearing A djustm ent.
5. Tighten w heel n u ts to 75 ft. lb.
CROSSMEMBER A N D SUSPENSION U N IT
C om ponent parts o f th e fro n t suspension m ay be serviced
separately as o u tlined in th e preceding service operations.
However, if extensive service is to be perfo rm ed to cross­
m em ber, fram e, etc., th e unit can be rem oved and installed as
follows:
Removal
1. Place vehicle o n hoist and rem ove th e shock absorber
from th e low er co n tro l arm .
2. Rem ove idler arm and pitm an arm .
3. S u p p o rt engine and rem ove fro n t engine m o u n t center
bolts.
4. S eparate m ain brake feeder line from crossm em ber tee.
5. Rem ove b olts retaining crossm em ber hangers to fram e
side rails.
6
. Rem ove b o lts securing crossm em ber to fram e b o tto m rail
and low er th e assem bly fro m vehicle.
Installation

are im portant attaching parts in th at they could
affect the performance o f vital components and
systems, and/or could result in major repair ex­
pense. They must be replaced w ith parts o f the same
p a r t n u m b e rs o r w it h equivalent parts if
replacement becomes necessary. Do not use replace­
m ent parts of lesser quality or substitute design.
Torque values must be used as specified during
reassembly to assure proper retention o f these parts.
1. Ja ck crossm em ber in to positio n u nder fram e an d install
fram e b o tto m rail m ounting bolts.
2. Install b olts securing crossm em ber hanger to fram e and
to rq u e nuts. See specifications.
3. P osition engine on fro n t m o u n t and install m ounting b o lt
an d to rq u e 45 lb. ft.
4. Install the shock absorber.
5. C onnect fro n t brak e m ain feeder line and bleed brakes as
described in S ection 5.

. Install idler arm an d pitm an arm .
7. C heck and A djust fro n t en d alignm ent as o u tlin ed under
“ M aintenance an d A dju stm en ts” in this section.

. Rem ove vehicle fro m hoist.
